In Her Own Words’ newest release “Everything I Used To Trust” is a great LP if you are looking for something new to add to your pop-punk/hardcore collection.

With sounds of A Day To Remember and Chunk! No, Captain Chunk! this band has the potential to really bring something new to the table. The only problem with this LP is that with all this potential, it is clear that this band has room to grow. With their closing song “Continuity”, this potential is evident through their ability to take a different path than other pop-punk/hardcore bands do musically.

Their instrumentation is something that is more dynamic than most bands of this genre and should be expressed more often on this LP in order to differentiate themselves. Possibly the most important song on this LP is “Reverie”. This song wraps the album into one and if you are looking for a song to get you started into the LP, check it out. It shows their style of vocals and how they put a different spin on the traditional song structure in the pop-punk genre. Another notable song, “With or Without You” shows the hardcore side of the band. This song showcases their screaming as well as a bit more technical instrumentation. Although this aspect of the genre is not something new, the style of In Her Own Words has potential to be something that can really be different than other bands.

Regardless of the overall satisfaction, this LP has a very frustrating aspect to it. This band comes very close to being a band that can really stand out in the crowd, the only problem being that it falls short at this moment. The band has a lot of time to grow, this being only their third release. If they can mix the intelligence of “Continuity” into their main songs, they can really have a powerful sound and possibly change the pop-punk genre. At the end of the day, this is still a great LP. It has the traditional feel of a pop-punk album, but with a more original twist. Check out “Everything I Used To Trust” and be sure to stay in touch with what’s to come next with the band because they have the potential to create a revolutionary sound in the future. In the meantime, jam out to their newest release and look out for a show near you!

Abandoned By Bears new EP release “Bear-Sides” ranks itself among the styles of bands like Chunk! No, Captain Chunk and A Day To Remember.

With their catchy pop-punk choruses and metalcore breakdowns they have proven themselves to adequately mimic the sounds of an all too familiar pop-punk/easycore band. Any fans of Chunk or ADTR will enjoy the easygoing feel that the band radiates with songs like “We Can Break Loose” and “You Need To Stick Up!”, but lose an important sense of originality.

Although the band has a very similar sound to other bands of the genre, they break apart from the group slightly with their heavy use of synthesizer that can be heard in every song. This instrument gives a solid reinforcement and a creative touch to the otherwise generic sound of the EP. Overall, the instrumentation of the EP doesn’t prove to set itself that far apart from bands of the same field; the guitar riffs and chords are some that can be found in almost every other pop-punk band out there, and the drums don’t prove themselves to do any more than follow the minimum synchronizing.

Even without a separating element, the band can still find a place for pop-punk/easycore fans. Listeners of the genre will be content with the upbeat and major sounds of the catchy melody lines and unsurprising breakdowns. The release of this 4-song EP (one song being “INTRO”, a 38 second instrumental) gives a good look into the band’s consistent sound. Fans of the genre should definitely check it out if they are looking for the familiar sound of clean singing melodies and basic breakdowns.

Neck Deep released their new EP for FREE download today and vocalist Ben Barclow has the lowdown on each track!

Up in Smoke

This one is pretty much a song to/about my parents and the many times I’ve done things that makes them lose their trust for me. It came after I got kicked out of university, which was a huge disappointment in their eyes. The song is kind of an apology but at the same time is expressing my frustrations in them, wishing they would see my side of things and stop being so uptight,

"I wish you’d see my point of view, you’re so uptight loosen your screws". We’re very different people, myself and my parents but at the same time I don’t know what I’d do without them, "when you’re gone, I’ll be broken, let it out, cut me open" explains that pretty well. It’s a weird one in terms of how personal it is, but at the same time I think everyone has experienced something like this, being a let down or having a hard time doing what they’re told/expected to do.

Table’s Turned

This is purely a moving on song, about how the table’s turned in a certain situation. Rain in July is full of anguish about all these different things that happened with a particular someone, but now this explains more recent events and how it came to the time when I really had moved on. It’s really quite obvious, but that’s the way I wanted it to be.

It’s kind of therapeutic to write a song like this, laying to rest everything that happened, and that’s the intention with this one. It’s one last slightly bitter song to try and put an end to it all, at least from my side of things.

Head to the Ground

This one is pretty much a little love song, but thrown in there are all the worries I have about myself, and my fear of fucking everything up. It’s really kind of explaining all the feelings of a new relationship, cute little quirks that everyone goes through, but once more counterbalanced with ‘I hope I don’t drag you down’ and 'I hope this can all work out'. Really it’s just about hoping that this new relationship can work out, and if it doesn’t it’ll be down to me!

The line "cuz I feel like myself when I’m running my head to the ground" is just about when you feel good because of a new relationship, even when there’s outside things that you’re struggling with (up in smoke), because that girl can help you out and keep your head on straight. It’s a cute one, a little weird too, but I’m sure people will see the meaning in there when they hear it!
