British rock trio Leogun has partnered with Yamaha Entertainment Group to release their self-titled debut EP on October 16. The 4-song EP comes in advance of a full-length album due in early 2013 and marks the first-ever release on Yamaha’s newly launched record label.

MTV has premiered the music video for the band’s first single “Let’s Be Friends,” which you can check out here: http://on.mtv.com/Q1O3T8. Similarly, MSN Music’s Reverb blog proclaims “sometimes it’s just a good, cleansing blast for the ears to hear some straight-up rock,” saying that the song “could be a Led Zeppelin outtake.”

Feel free to stream & share “Let’s Be Friends” online:

http://soundcloud.com/leogun/lets-be-friends

The collaboration between Leogun and Yamaha came in part through the latter’s two-decade relationship with Elton John, whose management company (Rocket Entertainment Group) also works with Leogun. In early 2012, Yamaha Entertainment Group’s founder Chris Gero heard the band and immediately signed them as the flagship act for the label. “It’s brilliant,” enthuses front-man Tommy Smith. “Everything is so fresh. The label is just as excited as we are. We’re not just another artist at the bottom of a massively long list on a giant roster. We’re their first signing, and they’ve got as much vested in us as we do in them. We’re all moving in the same direction. It’s like being part of a crew on a ship.”

Gero and Grammy Award-winning engineer Bryan Lennox brought the band to the iconic Blackbird Studios in Nashville where everyone from Kings of Leon to The White Stripes have recorded. Instead of using digital tools such as Pro Tools, they recorded straight to analog, distilling gritty rock, swaggering blues, and haunting soul into anthemic and artful songs.

Leogun is guitarist/vocalist Tommy Smith, bassist Matt Johnson and drummer Mike Lloyd.

You can grab the new Leogun single “Let’s Be Friends” right now on iTunes.

This week’s “Classic Bands and Why We Love Them” contribution is from Josh Travis of Glass Cloud.

One of the most influential bands for me still to this date is a band I grew up on called Nothingface. I think I first heard these dudes back in 1998, just before they released the record: An Audio Guide To Everyday Atrocity. I remember watching them and wondering how the hell the guitarist was down stroking damn near everything he was playing…it was absurd. They played so well together, they were like a perfectly put together well oiled machine. Lyrically, sometimes it even got scary lol I seriously listen to them to this day. There’s a track on the record Pacifier called “Perfect Person”, I want to cover that song sooooo bad, but I don’t want to flip it or change it at all, and that seems to be the big thing with covers now is changing them? F that…I just want to cover this song as is…it’s so brutal to me. Then Violence???? seriously…that record is still mind blowing to me. It’s like a metal band that’s not your typical kind of metal. These dudes were killing before there were ”breakdowns”…I still take notes from their records ;)

Defiler - Nematocera
Record Label: Razor & Tie
Release Date: October 9th, 2012

"I wanna see you cry, bitch!" For most of us, that was the introduction to the California four-piece lifecore band, Defiler. The band (who recently signed to Razor & Tie) is led by 19 year old front man Jake Pelzl and is rounded out by Ethan Lewis (guitar), Ian Poole (drums) and Jesse Dhaliwal (bass). From the first track "Lucky 38", it’s easy to see that Jake’s vocals have vastly improved from their debut record Pangaea. The musicianship has gotten better this time around as well; less chugging and more melody. Sure, there’s a breakdown here and there but they’re not as prevalent as they were on Pangaea. The inclusion of clean vocals (mostly as backup singing) are nice touch and stand out on a few tracks such as "Movin’ On Up The Nation’s Chain", and "Nuclear Anomaly".

It’s worth noting the band self-produced the record with mixing duties handled by Chris “Zeuss” Harris (Suicide Silence, Chelsea Grin, The Acacia Strain); definitely a step up from the production on Pangaea. A few of the more prominent tracks on the record would be the crushing song, “Octobortion” (featuring Frankie Palmeri of Emmure) and “Walk In The Glow” (the single to which they’re making a video for). Jake describes the latter as “…heavy, pummeling verses with the melancholy, harmonized leads under it - the technical bridge with crazy guitar patterns - and the melodic choruses.” All in all, this is a great record for fans of the deathcore genre. If you want something heavy to listen to while throw down with your bros, this is the record for you.

8.5/10

Zak Bagans, host of Travel Channel’s popular paranormal series Ghost Adventures, has joined forces with Lords of Acid’s Praga Khan for one of the most intriguing music releases ever produced, NecroFusion, due out October 23, just in time for Halloween.

Each one of the eleven tracks on NecroFusion not only tells the story of a departed soul who, for whatever reason, has not crossed over, but includes an actual audio message from the spirit – “electronic voice phenomena,” or EVP. Armed with his SB7 Spirit Box, a recording device well-known by devotees of the “Ghost Adventures” series, Bagans has encountered inhabitants of the spirit world during his paranormal investigations, reached out to communicate with and question them, and then, when a spirit chose to communicate, he recorded the spirits’ EVPs.

For NecroFusion, Bagans worked closely with Praga Khan, a legendary pioneer of post-industrial-electronic dance music. The two structured every song around a specific incident when Bagans had a ghostly encounter, and worked to have the music and lyrics reflect the tone of the spirits’ voices. Bagans wrote the lyrics and provided the earthbound spoken word/vocals for the tracks, while Khan wrote and recorded the music at his Brussels studio between mid-2011 and early summer 2012.

“For me,” said Bagans, “spirit communication is the most powerful communication I’ve ever encountered. The most powerful messages are delivered through music, and music truly influences the way you feel, it stimulates the emotional memories of your life. With NecroFusion, we’ve blended together these two powerful forms of communication – spirit and music. And the earthbound spirits have a lot to say.”

“Spirits want to be heard, that’s why they’re not at rest.” added Bagans. “They want to be heard.”
