The Color Morale’s latest release “Know Hope” has truly shown itself to be an intense progression from the band’s other albums. One widely criticized attribute of this album is the vocalist’s (Garret Rapp) jump from his growl sounding mid screams, to the Stray from the Path-esque, yelling vocals. Aside from the initial shock, the new style really seems to fit this album well. Not only does it stand out from other bands, but it gives a refreshing look into how the band went about this album.

They really plunged 100% into incorporating the new vocals into this album. The way that the band presents their still hope-filled lyrics has come to be much more of a pleasant surprise than a shocking letdown. Songs like “Saviorself”, “Smoke and Mirrors”, and “Steadfast” fully represent the fitting theme of the album. “Steadfast” shows that the vocalist (Garret Rapp) still has his pop/R&B cleans that fans fell in love with from the first album, while “Saviorself” can solely speak for the rest of the album with its style and structure. “Smoke and Mirrors” proves to fans that the band still has their hardcore edge and love of live energy.

The band recently underwent a few member changes, but they seemed to have pulled through on this album. The style is different, but still falls in line with the other albums. It shows a very positive and promising road to a more defining sound. The few criticisms on this album are that the guitar work and instrument technicality has been reduced in comparison to their previous albums. The band has always stood out with their simpler pop-structured songs, but this album seems to have exaggerated this strategy on the majority of the songs.

One greatly defining aspect of the band’s style has always been their guitar leads. They can be heard on every album (including this one) to date, and although they are not removed on this album, they have been noticeably reduced. Although this is an important part of the band’s sound fans can still looks forward to being immersed in the inspirational lyrics and melodies that have always been distinct in the band’s career.  Their single off this album, “Learned Behavior” received honorable reactions from fans. The song not only encouraged the fact that the band is still driving a message of hope and self-reconstruction; it perfectly represented what fans will come to hear on “Know Hope”.

Overall, this album is their most consistent yet and has proven to be their most popular. The new vocals (as well as the overall altered style of the band) will set the band off in a new and uplifting direction.

No Bragging Rights, a melodic hardcore band from Riverside, California wasted no time getting the crowd warmed up for the upcoming  bands. Vocalist Mike Perez sang the band’s songs with conviction, with some of the lyrical content coming from life experiences, according  to the bio on the band’s site; “Repeater” carries on the theme of perseverance and carrying on against life’s challenges and obstacles. “When you get knocked down, get back on the horse,” Perez says simply.

“Hope Theory,” the second track on Cycles, was inspired by the  deep connection No Bragging Rights have made with the people who come to their shows. “I am constantly talking with kids coming from broken homes, or the social outcast who is ready to give up. I tell them it will get better. It is always darkest before the dawn. Things can  change.”

I chatted up Hundredth vocalist, Chadwick Johnson before the doors opened for the show and asked him if they’ll ever perform my favorite  song, “Remain & Sustain” (the music video was inspired by The Sandlot). He said they probably never play that song even though there’s a  video for it. They did, however, play a handful for their 25 minute set, including the songs, “Carry On”, “Weathered Town”, and “Ruin”, a new  song from their Revolt EP coming out March 19th. I was hoping the vocalist from Vanna would come out and do Jonathan Vigil’s (The Ghost Inside) part on “Desolate” but Chad let the crowd sing that part instead.

I’m gonna be honest; I didn’t watch most of Vanna's set because an awesome ska band called Hermits of Suburbia were playing downstairs  around the same they played. I managed to catch Vanna’s last song though; the crowd was rowdy but I could tell they were saving their  energy for the last two bands.

Before the started playing, Vincent, vocalist for The Acacia Strain, brought out a dog they rescued from a Walmart parking lot earlier in the  tour and asked for some donations so they could take it to the vet. He said they’d put the above picture (or a slight variation) on a shirt and  raise money that way. The lights finally dimmed and TAS got the crowd moving with “Beast”, a song from their 2010 release, Wormwood. TAS showed no signs of wear and tear after flipping their van TWICE in one week earlier this year, as Vincent noted.

Some might say they’re out of place on this tour but ETID/TAS have toured together previously, so those complaints fell upon deaf ears. During the end of their set, Vincent asked the crowd who had seen the band when they played downstairs on the smaller stage and dedicated “Whoa, Shut It Down!” to the fans who had been there since the beginning.

After a 15 minute changeover, Every Time I Die took the stage and opened with,”Floater”, a track from their second album Hot Damn!. As  mentioned on the bands Twitter account; “…tonight we’re playing the extra good, top secret setlist that we only play for our favorite cities.”  There were plenty of sing-alongs as ETID played the best songs from their discography. “Wanderlust”, “Bored Stiff”, “The New Black”, “No Son of Mine” (The band played a breakdown medley of Pantera songs in the middle of this song; Domination/5 Minutes Alone/This Love) and one of my favorites, “Kill The Music” (This site is named after that song!) all made appearances during the band’s set.

Keith mentioned when  they played The Masquerade a few years ago, they played downstairs cause Marcy’s Playground had taken over the main stage. He said after they played, he went upstairs and caught a bit of their set and only saw a  handful of people and never imagined starting a band that would end bigger than Marcy’s Playground. For their last song of the night, “Indian Giver”, vocalist Keith Buckley and his brother/guitarist Jordan invited members of the crowd on stage to help sing and maybe even  get 5 minutes of fame. This tour has quite a few dates left on it, so don’t miss out on the action!

Rise Records is extremely proud to announce the signing of Face To Face. Rise Records will be releasing the band’s new album “Three Chords and a Half Truth” on April 9th, 2013. Pop punk seems to be one of the newer genre bandwagons that bands tend to jump on nowadays. But now you can start your own pop punk band with these easy tips!

1. Write about how bad it sucks to be in the friend zone

As one of the comments said, “they should’ve recorded this in a key a half step down from this. he’d have hit the notes much better. he just yelling most of the time now to hit his notes and it doesn’t fit this song too well.”

2. Take your band name from a better and bigger pop punk band

Clearly, they borrowed their name from the New Found Glory song of the same name. Which brings me to my next point..

Man Overboard; the only studio track on blink-182’s live album, The Mark, Tom, and Travis Show. Obviously, other bands have taken their names from songs titles/lyrics of popular bands, but it seems to be more prevalent in the tr00 pop punk scene.

3. Describe your personal life in a song; where you live, what you eat, etc.

The Wonder Years do a damn good job at it as evident in the above song. The lyrics speak for themselves:

The casino seemed like a bad idea but Denny’s seemed like a worse one and I don’t think that we’d ever let that stop us. We ended up busted, broken and choking down a Grand Slam. I can’t think of a better way for the night to end cause we’re this generation’s Outsiders but we’ve got worse intentions and they’ve got better haircuts

4. If you love your friends, by all means, tell the world

Chunk! No, Captain Chunk! (who got their name from The Goonies) REALLY love their bro’s. So much, that they wrote a song about it. They also have a songs about MILF’s, but we’ll save that for another time. Did I mention they’re French?!

5. Plaid shirts and V-Necks are a necessity!

You wanna be dressed your Sunday best when your friend borrows his dad’s expensive camera to film your band’s first music video. It also helps if you can find some nice shirts at the thrift store or borrow some from a friend.

Man Overboard have always been known for releasing an uncanny amount of material. They released four LP’s worth of songs between 2010 and 2011; Before We Met: A Collection of Old Songs (2010), their debut LP, Real Talk (2010), Human Highlight Reel: EP’s, B-Sides and Rarities (2011) and lastly, their Self-Titled debut on Rise Records in late 2011… a total of over 50 songs.

Starting with the Pop Punk’s Not Dead Tour with New Found Gory in late 2011 the band has consistently been on the road, be it headlining in USA, UK or Russia, taking part in the 2012 Vans Warped Tour or various other tours. The band is currently hard at work writing songs for their next Rise Records release.

Until then, Man Overboard and Lost Tape Collective have released a free two song EP of covers recorded by vocalist, Zac Eisenstein in his home this fall. The EP features songs originally by Crush and Soul Asylum and can be downloaded here. Additionally, Lost Tape Collective will re-release Before We Met in the coming months.

This week’s “Classic Bands and Why We Love Them” contribution is from Matt Marshall of Palisades.

Why I love them: I was 9 old when I first heard of  Linkin Park.  I’m now 22 and I can honestly say no band has ever impacted me the same.  They we’re able to take elements of Rock, Rap, hardcore and djing/electronics to make a complete new sound. No band in my opinion was able to make a more unique sound since. What makes Linkin Park a true classic is their ground breaking music. Their debut album “Hybrid Theory” was released over 10 years ago and I can honestly say it never gets old.  Without Linkin Park I wouldn’t be doing music and I can only hope one day my band can impact someone the same way Linkin Park has impacted me
