The solo project of James Dewees (The Get-Up Kids), Reggie And The Full Effect have gone back to old roots to the same stupid stuff they’ve always done. Yes, they. Although Dewees is the main man, he gets extra personnel from friends or he uses alter-egos on several tracks. For fans of RATFE, you would obviously know this.

If you have just discovered him/them, at least you now know. ‘No Country For Old Musicians’ is RATFE’s sixth studio album and is one that turns away from the previous album, which many fans disliked due to it taking on a darker, more serious tone as opposed to the stupidity that the first few albums had, and instead just goes back to how it used to be. When you press play, the stupidity begins.

The intro track is nothing more than a fourty second intro that feels like and old western film. That changes once the album kicks in and the stupidly titled track ‘Super Croc VS. Mega Doosh’ plays. It is as stupid in lyrics as the title suggests but yet the sound is that of Indie Rock. It is slightly grainy in sound but that adds to the effect of the album. The guitars are simple, as is everything else but the track is still a great little piece of groovy vibes.

The album progresses through yet more stupidity with tracks ‘Revenge Is A Dish Best Served At Park Chan-Wook’s House’, ‘Gimmie Back My Leg’, ‘Who Needs Another Drank?’, ‘Sundae, Booty Sundae’, ‘To The Fruit Wizards Of Donnington’ and ‘Danka Shane’. Each track is something new, ranging from something like Industrial to Rap to Electro-Pop, Post-Hardcore, Pop Punk… you name it, it will be in here somehow. It is a great mix however, keeping the album fresh and making you intrigued by the variation of sounds and the silliness of the album as a whole. Everything works, the guitars, bass, drums, keyboards and the vocals fit every song so well.

Alter egos of James, guest appearences from Floppy Disk-0 and popular alter-egos Fluxation and Common Denominator are here too, adding both to the stupidity of the album and also keeping the overall feel of the album going throughout. The album is mixed well and has been carefully handled, apparently the fan fundraising really did help the production of this album. Everything can be heard and it is something that is unique in these modern times, with everything being explored in great depth whilst still being that silly piece of heaven it is.

So then, James is back to his old ways, alter-egos, stupid song titles and everything else. Although the album is silly, it is still something so different, exploring all sorts of musical genres showing us that James is able to create versatile music for people to enjoy. This isn’t something for everyone, no doubt fans of the heavier music will miss the point behind the album, but yet it should please the die hard fans and could help gain some new fans. I personally am happy with this album.

As a whole, it is a great listen and provides a few laughs throughout letting me know that RATFE are back to their old roots again. James, you’ve only gone and done it again.

Earlier this year, Bleeding Through announced they were breaking up. This tour is their Farewell to The United States Tour.

First up were Gideon (Sworn In couldn’t make the show). This was 4th time seeing them (2nd with the new singer) A fight broke out during their second song. The asshole ended up get arrested, thankfully. It’s always funny when people think they’re tough shit for going to shows and picking fights. Their guitar tones and breakdown reminded me of Volumes for some reason. Some “hardcore” chick came out and did guest vocals on the last song; sounded a bit weak though.

Oceano were up next; plenty of hardcore dancers for them. Same can’t be said for the mosh pit action though. They put on a good show but I felt like all their songs blended together. Adam’s vocal performance was on point though. It’s interesting to note he doesn’t actually warm up before going on stage at all.

After a short intermission, Winds of Plague took the stage. Johnny, the vocalist, was dressed up as Bane from The Dark Knight Returns. It was more or less a budget version though. They played a mix of old and new songs, my favorite being “One Body Too Many” from their album, Decimate The Weak. On their next to last song, Say Hello to The Undertaker, (I think that was it) they filmed it for a music video. And of course the crowd went nuts when they heard that and did their best to get their faces seen.

Bleeding Through, one of the last great metal bands, graced the stage playing a 16 song set. They opened the show with Love Lost In A Hale Of Gunfire from their third album. “This is Love, This is Murderous”. Brandan mentioned his first experience in Atlanta when they played a record store. He was chewing gum while talking on the phone and the gum happened to pull one of fillings out. He said it was one of the worst pains ever; not to mention he had play a show 10 minutes later. Near the end of set, Brandan was giving a heartfelt farewell speech of sorts but some asshole had to be THAT guy who keeps talking while someone is being serious. He was noticeably pissed, so the band skipped right to their last song, Kill to Believe. RIP Bleeding Through (1999-2013_

Less Thank Jake are one their 9th studio album (E.P’s included in that count) and they still don’t seem to have aged. Producing fun, sing-along, upbeat Ska Punk Rock, they prove that they are still just as great as they were seventeen years ago. Full of memorable, catchy tunes that seem suitable for almost any occasion, the band appear to have had a lot of fun making this album.

It has a great mix between beautiful vocals, brilliant Rock riffs, simple yet awesome drums, funky bass-lines and the excellent use of the saxophone, providing a lively album that is surely going to satisfy Ska and Rock fans a-like.

The wonderful spree of short songs begins with ‘Good Enough’, a short, catchy tune that shows you exactly what to expect from the album. The album is very similar in its sound but yet the funky catchiness keeps you listening. The opener has a lot of charm and helps kick-start an album that is a little refreshing in a world where Rock music seems to get more repetitive everyday. Tracks like ‘Jump’, ‘Do The Math’, John The Baptist Bones’, ‘The Troubles’, ‘Sunstroke’ and ‘Weekends All Year Long’ follow the opener and fill the album full with Rock riff heaven, great Punk Rock vocals, catchy drum beats, funky bass riffing and the refreshing catchiness of the saxophones that fill up the entire album. It’s amazing to listen to, with it changing between the funky verses and upbeat choruses. It’s a mix that works, with every-thing working in perfect harmony to create an album that never lets up and doesn’t appear to run out of steam.

It’s an intriguing, delightful little piece that keeps the listener engaged with its array of short, catchy tunes that remain consistent throughout the albums duration. It’s mixed, produced and mastered perfectly, with every little detail tweaked so every little thing is audible. It is a little slice of Ska heaven, stuff that matches the catchiness of Reel Big Fish and The Specials with the modern Rock twist. It’s one of the finest Rock albums this year and is refreshing from the vast array of Metal, Pop, Dance and Rap that dominates everywhere you seem to go.

Less Than Jake have created an album that is simplistic on the outside but down-right funky once you listen. The moment you press the play, the infectious rhythms and harmonies within the album take over and it becomes essential listening, something that is a rarity with most of the albums released this year. It doesn’t lose steam, it just continues with the time flying by so fast. It’s the kind of stuff to make people think back to high school days and is something that the younger generation can listen to and fall in love with the catchy little songs that help make this album dominate over most Rock albums released in the last ten years.

Something a little different, a little special, ‘See The Light’ is the perfect slice of Ska Punk heaven and is a highlight of this year. Let the catchiness of saxophones. bass lines, choruses and guitars ensure whilst you tap away to the beautiful drum beats. This is something purely wonderful.
