2012 has came and disappeared as fast it entered and there were great albums to go along with it. We’ve compiled several lists below; enjoy!
Top 10 Albums

imageAwakening - As I Lay Dying

As I Lay Dying went what they know for this record and that’s creating straight up metalcore. Circle pit riffs, crushing double bass, powerful vocals and a live experience to back it up. It’s worth noting there’s much clean vocals on this record than previous releases.

Listen to: A Greater Foundation

image
Get What You Give - The Ghost Inside

One of my favorite hardcore bands (despite Scott Vogel’s irrelevant opinion) in recent years, The Ghost Inside decided to change it up on Get What You Give with clean vocal choruses and some group shouts but still retaining their melodic/breakdown driven song structures

Listen to: Engine 45

image
The Royal Thousand - Glass Cloud

When I heard two of the members graduated from Berklee College of Music; I immediately became hooked after hearing the first single, “White Flag”. You may know the talented guitarist, Joshua Travis from his old band, The Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza. His 8 string antics really add dynamics to a genre plagued by Hot Topic kids with swoop haircuts and V-necks. It must really suck to be Of Mice & Men right now.

Listen to: Ivy & Wine

image
Parkway Drive - Atlas

Australia has some of the best bands (Hands Like Houses, The Amity Affliction, I Killed The Prom Queen) and Parkway Drive are no exception. I’m truly convinced Winston McCall gargles some really fine Australian sand before he does a show because his vocals are some of the best I’ve heard.

Listen to: Old Ghost/New Regrets

image

Veil of Maya - Eclipse

A lot of people didn’t like this record cause they thought it was basically Periphery with Brandon Butler on vocals since Misha Mansoor co-wrote/produced this album. It’s some of their best work yet with lone guitarist Marc Okubo ripping up the fretboard. Sumeriancore at it’s best, at least until the new After The Burial comes out.

Listen to: Punisher

image
Whitechapel - Whitechapel

image
Lamb of God - Resolution

image
The Chariot - One Wing

image
Every Time I Die - Ex Lives

image
Periphery - Periphery II: This Time It’s Personal

Best New Band

image

Glass Cloud; they put out of the most impressive debuts for their respective genre.

Best Record Label
image
Sumerian Records; they have some of the most talented (and not so talented..) bands on their diverse roster.

Best PR/Publicist

George Vallee - Sumerian Records

PR people don’t get the recognition they deserve. Without them, we wouldn’t be able to cover shows and interview bands

Most Anticipated of 2013

Animals As Leaders
Austrian Death Machine
Born of Osiris
A Day to Remember
The Dillinger Escape Plan
Brand New
My Chemical Romance
Slipknot

The following list is from fellow contributor, Emily Bunn

Best Album: Deftones “Koi No Yokan”

The guys of Deftones did not disappoint with their follow up to 2010’s “Diamond Eyes”. “Koi No Yokan” fits right in with the sound that the Deftones made their own with “White Pony” and their self-titled. This album embodies everything I love about Deftones and I couldn’t be more happy with the album.

Best Tour: Taking Back Sunday - Tell All Your Friends 10 Year Anniversary Tour

I was only 11 years old when I first heard “You’re So Last Summer” From Tell All your Friends. This was the first album I ever bought with my own money and the first album I ever obsessed over. It’s still one of my favorite albums. To see the band perform it live from beginning to end was indescribable. The 11-year-old in me was beyond ecstatic.

Best New Band: Dead Sara

Dead Sara have had a huge year with the release of their first full length, acting as tour support for some big names, and taking part in the Vans Warped Tour over the summer. Their sound is not what you have come to expect with a female-fronted band, but it’s pure rock’n’roll.

Best Record Label: Sumerian Records

The people at Sumerian handled the Falling in Reverse/I See Stars debacle really well. They stood up for I See Stars and supported them throughout the situation and were quick to support the band’s statements on the whole issue. It’s always great when a label thoroughly supports their artists in tough situations like this.

Most Anticipated of 2013: Bring Me the Horizon

If “Shadow Moses” is anything to go by, the new BMTH album is going to be one of the best albums of 2013. Their last release leaves big shoes to fill, but from the little information the band has released about the new album it’s sure to live up to the expectations.

Song of the Year: Enter Shikari “Arguing with Thermometers"

Enter Shikari’s latest album is amazing from beginning to end, but “Arguing with Thermometers” has to be my favorite track. Not only is it a banger of a song, but the lyrics send a strong message about how corrupt our society has become and the effect we are having on our environment. The world needs more songs like this.

Artist of the Year: Pierce the Veil

Pierce the Veil played the main stage at the Vans Warped Tour, released their newest album “Collide With The Sky”, and sold out almost all of the dates on their headlining tour of the same name in 2012. They’ve proved that they are a forced to be reckoned with and they’re not going anywhere. I can’t wait to see what 2013 has in store for the quartet.

KALININ PROSPEKT released an exclusive teaser trailer via YouTube today in support of their forthcoming ‘Rekonstrukt’ EP set for release 02.27.13.

KALININ PROSPEKT, a heavy-hitting, Industrial/Alternative group, was founded in 2005 by former WAR MACHINE frontman, Dana Presson. At its inception, Dana discussed teaming with Jared Louche [CHEMLAB] who had expressed his interest in completing vocal and lyrical content for the material. However, in 2007, KALININ PROSPEKT went on hiatus due to other contractual obligations.

In 2012, KALININ PROSPEKT entered an undisclosed recording studio in Tampa Bay, FL. Two of the original eighteen KALININ PROSPEKT track recordings survived the latest cut and will appear on the EP.’ On 12/19/2012, Dana said, “I’ve reach out to Jared [CHEMLAB] to see if he would still be interested in throwing down on a track or two, or more. We’ll see what happens.” He also mentioned, “A U.S. tour is in the planning stages and we’re working on logistics for a European tour.”

Known for what has been called his ‘Don King Bravado’ of promotion, Dana secured a sponsorship from SCHECTER GUITAR RESEARCH and utilized a Prototype Ultra-III electric guitar strung with his custom DR HANDMADE STRINGS while tracking the ‘Rekonstrukt’ EP. He has stated that the guitar and strings “…were paramount in setting the tone of the record.”

KALININ PROSPEKT is now on all major social networking sites. ‘Rekonstrukt’ available February 27, 2013.

Black metal masters ROTTING CHRIST have debuted a new song off of ‘ΚΑΤΑ ΤΟΝ ΔΑΙΜΟΝΑ ΕΑΥΤΟΥ' (“Do What Thou Wilt”). The opening track, In Yumen – Xibalba” is streaming now at the Season of Mist Youtube page.

ΚΑΤΑ ΤΟΝ ΔΑΙΜΟΝΑ ΕΑΥΤΟΥ'
(“Do What Thou Wilt”) proves to be ROTTING CHRIST’s darkest output to date, and links the band to their heritage as pioneers of black metal. From underground heroes to international headliner status, the Greek band brings together elements from death, heavy and gothic metal with a rich native element that never betrays their dark roots. 'ΚΑΤΑ ΤΟΝ ΔΑΙΜΟΝΑ ΕΑΥΤΟΥ’ takes this  progression even further as ROTTING CHRIST forge their own sound, and augment it with female vocals, and a wide array of instrumentation. Their long years of composing and experience show unwavering confidence and maturity.

Regarding the new album, ROTTING CHRIST frontman Sakis Tolis recently revealed in an interview with Kaaoszine : “…It is an album that I have been working on for more than a year…It was recorded in Athens and mixed in Sweden with Jens Bogren (AMON AMARTH, OPETH, KATATONIA). I came up with our darkest outcome ever…It’s an interesting album, very apocryphal. Its a multinational album; it is about underworld Gods inspired by different ancient cultures.”

ΚΑΤΑ ΤΟΝ ΔΑΙΜΟΝΑ ΕΑΥΤΟΥ’ (‘Do What Thou Wilt’) is set for a North American release on March 5th.  ‘ΚΑΤΑ ΤΟΝ ΔΑΙΜΟΝΑ ΕΑΥΤΟΥ’ (‘Do What Thou Wilt’) will be available as a CD, double gate-fold Lp, and a limited edition Digibox including a pendant in a velvet bag, a flag, and a Digipak CD with the bonus track “Welcome to Hel”.

Manchester-based ORION’s follow up to their first release, Where Whales go to Die, is finally upon us after a one year wait.

The five-piece outfit changes a bit of their style by adding not one but two vocalists to the band’s sound. With a hard, scream-styled vocal and a softer cleaner sounding vocal, both styles add new dynamics to the bands already hard and progressive sound introducing complex layers and more emotion to the music.

The vocal additions are sure to please both old and new fans alike as the band continues to mature their sound with tracks like ‘Omnes In Pulverem’, ‘The Lucifer Experiment’ and ‘Epiphany’.

Fans of the band will be able to find the album on iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, Deezer, CM DISTRO, Bandcamp (Rogue Records America page), and close to 200 other digital services online.

You can get the album with a free digital booklet here: http://roguerecordsamerica.bandcamp.com/album/orion-all-this-world-means

The album track listing is as follows:

Omnes in Pulverem

These Chains

Contours

The Lucifer Experiment

Relatively Minor

Shift

Epiphany

Futurorum

All This World Means contains eight tracks including the first single ‘Epiphany’, the lyric video for the single was released 2 days after the single was put out worldwide and a revision of Relatively Minor off the first EP.

San Francisco indie-rock trio Geographer will kick off the New Year with a 3-week headlining tour beginning January 12 in Portland, OR. With direct support from ON AN ON, the dates will take the band throughout the West Coast and Midwest, with stops in Denver, Austin, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles and more. This tour follows two very successful nationwide tours earlier this year that saw Geographer performing to sold out venues across the country.

Geographer continues to tour in support of their widely-praised new album MYTH, released earlier this year on Modern Art Records. The San Francisco Chronicle proclaims “pop music hasn’t seen such a seamless marriage between techno beats and swooning cello parts since…well, this might just be a first,” and Paste declares “their music seems equally comfortable in such disparate venus as wild dance clubs and quiet coffee shops.”

Geographer recently recorded a cover of Kate Bush's “Cloudbusting.”

Feel free to download & embed the track here: http://bit.ly/SMVRyS

Geographer teamed up with producer Eli Crews (tUnE-yArDs, Beulah, Why?, Deerhoof) and renowned mixer Chris Zane (Passion Pit, The Walkmen, Holy Ghost!, Tokyo Police Club) to scrupulously craft MYTH. The 10-song set features Mike Deni's distinct melodic vocals flirt with his dazed synth melodies and alluring guitar riffs; while Nathan Blaz's haunting electric cello cords, and Brian Ostreicher's vibrant drums blend together to help create the mind-altering, ten track album that is pulsating with complex poly-rhythms and stunning harmonies.
