Hatebreed will release their brand new full length album, The Divinity of Purpose, on January 29th 2013 on Razor & Tie.

If you’re tired of the radio playing the same songs over and over, it’s cool, because your favorite bands have your back, as always. Fearless Records’ “Punk Goes Pop” is back with volume 6, set to release November 5th, featuring a handful of songs I’m sure you won’t be surprised by. It’s so fun to hear bands cover quirky mainstream songs, and I have to admit, I’ve had the album on repeat for a couple hours now.
The first of 13 tracks you’ll hear when you pop the CD in (do people do that anymore?) is Bruno Mars’ “Grenade” covered by Memphis May Fire. Don’t expect the slow song you’ve heard a million times, though. MMF turned up the tempo a couple of notches and gave it that recognizably punk sound, and did so very well. The vocals were pretty clean throughout, which I, personally, am indifferent about; it still sounds like MMF!
If you’re already a fan of Mayday Parade, their cover of Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know” might just be your favorite on the album. Even better - it features Vic Fuentes of Pierce the Veil. Being a huge fan of both bands, I know Derek (the lead singer of Mayday Parade) and Vic sound quite different, but damn do they sound beautiful together. The cover is fantastic, even with the faster tempo they decided to go with.
Breathe Carolina brings in a classic, covering Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean.” I can’t say it’s my favorite cover. It’s sounds a bit awkward, which might just be the autotune. This one’s the kind of cover that you either love or hate right off the bat. However, I give them major props. Covering the King of Pop? Very gutsy!
The Maine decided on a classic, as well, covering Cindi Lauper’s “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.” They changed the entire song around for themselves, and it came out great! Don’t be expecting some up-beat, quirky, mid-80’s pop song. It’s been slowed down a bit and punked out. I give them mega props for really making it their own!
The whole album, just like the rest of the Punk Goes Pop series, is just pure entertainment. It’s fun to rock out and sing-a-long to in the car. So don’t forget to check out all the bands’ covers on there; including “Call Me Maybe” by Upon a Dawning (which came out awesome by the way), “Paradise” by Craig Owens, and “Mercy” by The Word Alive!

This week’s “Classic Bands and Why We Love Them” contribution is from Stars In Stereo.
When we first set out to write our album, we really used 30 Seconds to Mars’ vision as an inspiration for our own. The cult mentality that they have spun into a really positive movement for their fans is exactly what we want to see coming from our fans. When you go to a 30STM show, you really feel that movement building inside of their fans. Whether it be an emotional movement or a physical, collective wave of arms up and bodies jumping as high as they can, they really sell their message to their fans in a way that everyone in the room can get behind.
Not to mention the cinematic elements to their music. You can put on any one song of theirs, close your eyes, and find yourself lost in a very vivid scene of your own creation. When we write and when we play live, we aim to connect in a very similar fashion, it’s something we strive to do because it’s something that is incredibly important to us. We all grew up connecting to bands in the same way, and when we first heard This Is War, it brought us closer as a band as we could all relate to the music similarly, and it brought us closer to discovering our own unique vision and path.
Where most artists would be satisfied, celebrating their accomplishments and even resting, Lauren Evans refuses to stop. The Emmy nomination along with the 2 recent commercial releases is a great feat for most, to Lauren this is just the beginning. On October 16th Lauren released the 3rd single from her mixtape, this time offering us her beautiful rendition of True Colors. This song, which was made famous by Cyndi Lauper, fits Lauren’s voice like a glove.
Even though Lauren is new to the Indie Artist scene, her successful songwriting career has taught her a lot. The same tenacity she used to solidify her place as a hit songwriter is sure to bring her to the forefront of the music scene. Already releasing 2 singles this year, Lauren shows no sign of stopping. She plans on releasing her full mixtape in a few weeks.
When asked what’s next on her already full schedule, Lauren immediately talks about the upcoming shows planned in Los Angeles over the next few months. Judging from the great reception her many fans have given her, she will be performing to a full house. If you haven’t heard Lauren Evans sing, you are depriving your ears of love. If a sunrise had a voice, I’m sure it would sound like Lauren Evans’ cover of True Colors.

Music has not been the same since the recession hit. The hike in gas prices has to be to blame for the single-phrase hook hell that we’ve been subject to. That being said, like flowers in Spring, prolific artists like Adele, Miguel, and now Lauren Evans are breaking the mold.
The dawn of a new and vibrant era in music is at hand. New artists, like Lauren Evans, give us hope that music with chord changes and great melodies is making a come back. I’m excited that we don’t have to wait much longer.
Lauren Evans’s camp recently posted a video on YouTube with industry veterans endorsing her artistry. Soon after the video release, Lauren Evans’s mixtape, Uncovered, became available as a free download. Hit Music Producer Rykeyz says, “She is definitely the recording industry’s best kept secret.” Finally the secret is out and available at laurenevans.com.
