When Welsh pop heroes Race Horses set out to make their new album, Furniture, they had one major rule – everything had to feel fresh. “All the new music I was hearing seemed to be hidden behind reverb, behind a veneer of cool,” says singer Meilyr. “We wanted to make something much more stark and direct.”

The album they created is exactly that: a pin-sharp pop record inspired by Queen, Dexy’s Midnight Runners, Soft Cell – and by the disco at the youth hostel they were staying at during the two-week recording sessions at The Pool in South London. “It was full of Spanish tourists dancing to Michael Jackson,” says guitarist Dylan. We were there on the dance floor trying to work out why it sounded so good, analysing Quincy Jones’s production and thinking, how did he get that hi-hat sound, or that groove?” The experience rubbed off onto the album. “It inspired us to make something quite rhythmic and groove-based that wasn’t computerised or perfect,” says Meilyr.

Though it’s frequently an upbeat piece of work, there’s a stark contrast in Furniture’s lyrics: its central idea speaks to universal feelings of frustration and the everyday erosion of relationships. “It’s about people that spend a lot of time together gradually starting not to see eachother,” says Meilyr. “If you put a picture on your wall, over time it dissolves into the background. It’s the same when you’re living with someone; they become an object over time.” That’s the thought that fuels the chiming title track Furniture, the percussive Mates and more.  While the album sees the band’s rampant creativity boiled down into perfect pop, there are also surprises around every corner - lyrics inspired by DH Lawrence and Thomas Hardy, and an unusual sonic palette employed throughout, including clarinets and bassoonsrecorded on a 4-track in the boiler room of the Royal Academy of Music.

The core members of Race Horses grew up in Aberystwyth, a sleepy holiday town on the west coast of Wales that’s as far from the heart of the music business as is possible. “Our formative years were the opposite of something like Skins,” says Meilyr. “Teenagers weren’t shagging and taking drugs, they were listening to their dad’s record collections. I was wearing flares and listening to prog rock.”

With two members of the band having earned great praise in Wales as Radio Luxembourg, Race Horses debuted in 2010 with the critically acclaimed Goodbye Falkenburg. Now that harpist-turned-guitarist Mali Llewelyn and percussionist Dan Bradley have joined Dylan, Meilyr and Gwion, Furniture has the five-piece feeling like they’re starting anew. “We’ve got the same name,” says Dylan, “but in a way, it feels like a totally different band.”

Orlando, Florida’s Tarek Kasmi has released the first single from his upcoming Lightbringers EP. A lyric video for the song, entitled “Hail To The King,” is now live on Kasmi’s YouTube channel.

Produced by Gold record producer James Paul Wisner (Dashboard Confessional, Underoath, Paramore), Lightbringers marks a transition in Kasmi’s career towards more sophisticated song structures and honest, outspoken lyrical commentary. “Hail To The King” introduces listeners to this move with upbeat, sunny pop/rock reminiscent of 50’s doo-wop, topped off with sarcastic lyrics that mock our ultra-regulated modern society.

When asked about the unusual combination of such harsh lyrics with cheery instrumentation, Kasmi responded, “The lyrics are basically poking fun at how little freedom we actually have left today; for me, happy pop music just makes the sarcastic tone that much more in-your-face.”

“Hail To The King” is currently available on iTunes. Listeners can expect an alternate version of the song as a freebie in the near future. For more news and updates, please visit http://www.tarekkasmi.com/.

Central Pennsylvania pop punks The Groundbreaking Ceremony are currently in the midst of a summer long stint on the annual punk rock juggernaut known as the Vans Warped Tour. The band has been splitting their time between the Kevin Says and Ernie Ball Stages, where they’re quickly winning fans over with tunes off their latest EP Don’t Tell Me What I Can’t Do, which is packed with some of the catchiest melodies, driven guitar work, and melodic pop punk songs found anywhere out there.

The pop punk underdogs — featuring Jonnie Baker, Scott Southlea, Nick Walters and Dirk Smith — gained the love and support of thousands of fans by turning heads with their debut EP I Can’t Believe It’s Not Better! in late 2010, which captivated listeners with its irresistible, catchy melodies and thoughtful lyrics. Their EP, produced and engineered by Doug White (Gym Class Heroes, Every Time I Die), even went on to receive praise on AbsolutePunk.net which raved, “For only their debut EP, I Can’t Believe It’s Not Better! is catchy, fast, and fun, embedding the best aspects of pop-punk music into this six song EP.”

Armed with endless potential, the band took their debut EP on the road, on self-booked tours throughout the northeast, and by working for the 2011 V
ans Warped Tour where they took payment in stage time all across the country, playing over a third of the tour, and selling over 6,000 copies of the EP over the course of the summer alone.

Nothing can adequately describe a band’s dedication or commitment to their cause quite like the praise which the band received from JR Wasilewski of LESS THAN JAKE fame who in 2011 called them, “THE hardest working band on the tour. They drive themselves show to show in their airport shuttle bus, get up and walk the line where fans are waiting to get into Warped to sell their CD, then go to catering where they proceed to pack lunches and dinners for all of the stage crews and mobile workers on the tour that can’t make it to catering. They don’t get paid, oh, and they don’t play every day. That’s right. They DON’T PLAY EVERY DAY.”

JR later went on to say, “If you see their merch booth or their name on the schedule or they come up to you while you’re waiting in line to get in, buy their CD and support these guys. They deserve it.” How’s that for a blessing from one of the band’s ska/pop punk forefathers?

The band’s hard work paid off when they were asked back to perform on the entire 2012 Warped Tour.

Known also for their enthralling live performances and intimate engagement with fans, these up-and-coming pop punkers are excited for what the future holds. Of the new EP, Baker says, “It’s so refreshing to look at what we’ve done. To see how much we’ve grown and continue to grow, as we finally after years of trying, are putting to paper some of the best material that we’ve ever written, that says exactly how we feel, and how we’ve felt,” says Baker. “Music almost seems like a commodity nowadays — so to know in our hearts that what we’re putting out there wasn’t written for us, speaks to us as musicians, and speaks to us as fans of the genre, and really bares the brunt of everything we’ve felt in our hearts — it lets us know that we’re still doing music for all of the right reasons. THAT’S the record we’re looking to put into people’s hands.”

The Groundbreaking Ceremony’s new EP Don’t Tell Me What I Can’t Do and debut EP I Can’t Believe It’s Not Better! are available online at all major digital music outlets.

After Vans Warped Tour wraps next month, The Groundbreaking Ceremony plans to continue touring into the fall as well as begin work on their next record.

Liverpool’s The Wombats will return to the U.S. this Fall for a 6-week nationwide tour that includes stops at Austin City Limits and Seattle’s Bumbershoot. Tickets are on sale Today (Friday, July 20) - see below for details. The tour is in support of their hit “Jump Into The Fog.” The new single off their highly-acclaimed album, The Wombats Proudly Present…This Modern Glitch (Bright Antenna/ILG), has been one of the band’s biggest airplay records ever in the UK and Australia, marking their sixth Top 40 single overseas. The single is proving to have similar success in the U.S. - not only did it reach #1 on Sirius XM's “Alt Nation" countdown, but it just broke into the Top 25 Alternative Chart and continues to climb. The official music video, which you can watch (here), has over 2.4 million hits on Youtube.

The trio’s return stateside comes after a hugely successful Spring U.S. tour that saw the band performing to sold-out crowds in New York, Boston, Los Angeles and more, culminating in a performance on Conan, which you can watch here. Afterwards, the band returned to the U.K. to begin a hectic Summer that has included headlining a series of Olympic Torch Relay concerts in Bolton and Liverpool, performing on the European festival circuit, and supporting Red Hot Chili Peppers on their U.K. stadium tour.

The Wombats’ sophomore album This Modern Glitch is the most successful outing from the Liverpool trio to date, debuting at #3 in the U.K. and # 2 in Australia, and receiving worldwide praise. Entertainment Weekly applauds their “bright, buzzy indie pop concoctions that have made audiences on both sides of the Atlantic shake and swoon,” while SPIN declares them “Echo & The Bunnymen for the internet age.” Similarly, The Sunday Times proclaims This Modern Glitch “a ten-song masterclass in spiky, lyrically-vivid, synth-coloured pop…nothing can detract (or distract) from this album’s infectiousness.” The Wombats made their U.S. television last year on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, performing their Top 20 UK single, “Tokyo (Vampires and Wolves).” The track was a BBC Radio 1 “Single of the Week”and has already gone gold in the U.K. and Australia, with its witty, tongue-in-cheek, rock stars on rampage video now at over 3.6 million YouTube plays.

Recorded at NRG Recording Studios in Los Angeles, This Modern Glitch was produced by Rich Costey (Muse, Franz Ferdinand, Bloc Party) and Eric Valentine (Queens of the Stone Age, Lostprophets), with additional production prowess contributed by super-producers Jacknife Lee (U2, Snow Patrol, R.E.M.) and Butch Walker (Fall Out Boy, The Donnas, Weezer). The 10-song set retains the immediacy and hook-filled sensibility of their stunning UK platinum-selling debut, 2007’s The Wombats proudly present … Guide To Love, Loss And Desperation, while introducing aggressive dance elements and a heavier, wryer lyrical bent to their infectious alt-pop.

The Wombats are “Murph” (lead guitar, lead vocals, keyboards), Dan Haggis (drums, backing vocals) and Tord Øverland-Knudsen (bass, backing vocals).

The hotly tipped metalcore band has been elbowing its way onto the national scene as a full-time touring outfit, cultivating fans at an alarming clip with a crushingly heavy, artful take on the genre that gives subtle tips of the hat to bands as diverse as THE ACACIA STRAIN, CIRCA SURVIVE and LINKIN PARK. The band’s passionate music, coupled with an explosive live show, has made FIT FOR A KING a sensation in the independent music scene, as evidenced by the 600,000+ fans who viewed their debut video on YouTube.

“‘Descendants’ is a good introduction to FFAK because it’s energetic and in your face. It is one of our heaviest songs but it has a lot of groove,” explains guitarist Justin Hamra. “We shot most of the video during the show, and then worked until about 2 am getting single shots, and then had a 12 hour drive the following day to make it to the next show in Tennessee.” All in a day’s work for one of the underground metal scene’s most buzzing bands.

It’s 2012 folks, marking three years since the post-hardcore outfit Broadway released their debut full length Kingdoms, and finally they’ve released their long anticipated sophomore full length  Gentlemen’s Brawl. The question remains however, does the album live up to its predecessor, and the amount of hype generated in the time waiting?

Starting off, the album already has a different style as compared to their debut. It’s definitely taken a ’poppier’ direction, while this in itself isn’t a bad thing, it may not be what fans have expected. It’s taken an upbeat sound to it, and as compared to the previous, it gives off the illusion that it’s not the same ‘heaviness’. I use that term lightly, since the last one wasn’t a heavy album in the typical sense. Those who were expecting the same as Kingdoms will find themselves disappointed, while many others will openly welcome the changes Broadway have made to their sound.

Vocally, Misha is as strong as ever, however I’ve noticed he relies a little less on hitting the higher notes in this album; instead incorporating what I’ve deemed as yell vocals, always a nice addition that adds variety to their songs. As said before, songs are mostly structured in an upbeat, radio rock structure. That in no way is an insult, but it’s a bit of a let down. As the band has described it themselves, it’s most definitely “much softer” and “more punk and rock than anything”.

Broadway fans of Kingdoms, unless you are very open to obvious change, this album will not be for you, nor for the typical post-hardcore fan. However, if you’re open to anything, give this album a try, maybe it will suit your tastes.

(Ps. I’d like to mention I’m not going to be including scores in my reviews anymore. If you truly want to know what I think of the album, read the actual review. Of all the reviews I’ve read, I’ve noticed that scores never match up the actual review, so do me and everyone else a favor and read the review).
