Unsigned Spotlight: The Spider Accomplice

The Spider Accomplice is a modern rock force painting webs in the sky in red and green…and pink.

Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.

Vocals: VK Lynne, Guitars: Arno Nurmisto

For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to The Spider Accomplice? How long has the band been around?

VK has been lead singer and lyricist for Vita Nova and stOrk. Arno played bass with Art of Shock. The Spider Accomplice has been writing, recording, and performing for about 3 years.

What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?

The Spider Accomplice came from a poem that I wrote. It essentially personifies my songwriting ideas as a spider spinning in my mind, helping me to clear it out of my feelings- like a tiny accomplice. Further, the idea of the name was confirmed by a quote by Nabokov: "I have been my own accomplice, who knows too much, and therefore is dangerous.”

Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?

We write all the songs together. I handle lyrics and Arno writes the music. Our themes are often related to finding the hope in varied situations, often painful ones. The 3 EP's of the Los Angeles Trilogy were tied together as an entire concept album, telling the story of a character named Bromelaid. Our topics evolve as we evolve; we write about what's going on in our lives and in the world currently.

What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?

Muse, 30 Seconds to Mars, My Chemical Romance, Nightwish, Beth Hart

Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?

For me, Melissa Etheridge was the artist who made her pick up a guitar, and from that moment on, I knew she wanted to be a singer/songwriter.

What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, etc. …

It may sound weird, but I tend to put on headphones and listen to Macklemore or the Roots. That usually puts me in the right headspace.

What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?

I think we're about to have it! Next month, we'll be traveling to Mexico to play the LIFA music festival. It will be our first show as a band in a different country.

If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?

I would want to go on the road with Delain, because their sound is so infectious, Evanescence because I feel a lyrical kinship with Amy Lee, Halestorm because I'd love to sing with Lzzy Hale, and Imagine Dragons, because I think they're breaking some new and interesting ground.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

If you start at the beginning of our catalog and listen all the way through, you'll notice an alarming variety of styles. Don't let that throw you. We are inspired by so many different artists, disciplines, genres, and ideas; our music reflects our collective art intake. Music should grow and test boundaries and sometimes sound off the wall...but no matter where we take them, our songs are always coming from our hearts, and they're always meant to make the listener feel less alone.
