Unsigned Spotlight: Scant Regard

Will Crewdson is Scant Regard. A full on electro-popping, rockabilly dabbling, surf-guitar twanging industro-funk explosion in neon hues.

For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to Scant Regard? How long has the band been around?

Scant Regard is my solo project and I play everything and do everything. I’ve been doing it for 7 years.

What’s the origin of the project name and have you changed the band’s name before?

The name represents the attitude I have to the music. When I started it I wanted to do something that didn’t have to consider a band dynamic and would show “scant regard” for guidelines.

What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?

The new album has a running theme of the devolution of our planet. There’s still some hope in there but mostly it’s the soundtrack to mass destruction.

What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?

The Tubes, Depeche Mode, Gazelle Twin, Black Line, Cabaret Voltaire and Fad Gadget. Probably more from the past than the present but many of these artists seem timeless in what they were doing.

Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a project?

Anyone who went it alone and allowed their music to breathe without constraints.

What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …

More mental exercises. Getting psyched up. I like to treat the performance as a gradual physical warm up rather than do it before.

What has been the biggest highlight of the project's career so far?

Playing a rowdy packed club in Berlin was great. Also The Redwood Bar in LA. I’ll be playing there again in November.

If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?

Depeche Mode would be perfect as they’re the prime example of a band becoming massive without compromising or diluting their style and sound.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Check out my new album Skipping Over Damaged Area - available from scantregard.com plus my covers EP which just came out BUTCHERIZATION. And while you’re there check out when I’m playing live.
