Daniel - Blue Ox, Devil Inside
3 years
What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?
Late Night Fights was a name I came up with when naming a few other bands I was with and have always wanted to use it. As I wrote more songs about internal and external struggles it was a perfect match. It’s the first and only name the band has had.
Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?
I (Guanz) wrote most of the first record while touring with my old band New Medicine. The new EP was written as a band. Sometimes I have ideas that I write down or record on my phone then we jam out riffs, other times we just jam on riffs and structure them into songs. The subject matter is typically extreme ups or downs that we or people close to us experience, and we put that energy into writing. Life is a roller coaster so I don’t see that changing any time soon.
What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?
My favorite bands are Queens of the Stone Age and Rage Against the Machine. Daniel’s is Neurosis. Shane’s is Rush.
Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?
We’ve all been playing for decades and there are so many sources of inspiration that drive us to play. My first concert was Primus and Beck and the crowd was a sea of people all smashed together just moving together as this giant unit. Watching old Woodstock videos of Hendrix lighting his guitar on fire and Kurt Cobain going apeshit were huge moments of rock history that got me really into wanting to perform.
What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …
Singing Blue Christmas, doing pushups and jumping jacks, screaming at a wall, drinking whiskey to take the edge off, and meditating are some examples.
What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?
Releasing this new album is definitely a big deal for us. We’ve homed in on a sound and are stoked to get it in your ears.
If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
There are so many to list, but I’d personally love to play with Queens of the Stone Age, Thrice, or the Deftones sometime. Refused, System of a Down, and Black Sabbath would kick ass as well.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
We can’t wait for our new album to drop this Friday! Check out “Renal 911” and let us know where you want us to tour to!
