Eric Ruelas - Bass
Omar Sultani - Drums
For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to In Her Own Words? How long has the band been around?
As for myself (Ian), In Her Own Words was the first band I ever became a part of. I had another band in high school called One For The Money that was pretty much just me and my close friends having a good time, but I was never as invested in it as IHOW. Joey had been in and out of five or so other bands that didn't hold up until he found us during our vocalist search last year. Eric and Omar were a bass and drum duo that we picked up back in 2009. They had a band called Harvey Lee, it was super death metal haha. But I'd say this band has seriously been around and active since 2010 when we released Brand New Me. Previously to that IHOW existed, but not with the members that came together to push this band as hard as we have.
What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?
The name came about in the early stages of the band, honestly there wasn't much thought put into it, we found it in a magazine. The name has never been changed because we didn't want to confuse people once we got rolling so it just stuck. Not the ideal name I would have for my band
Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?
I come to the table with a bunch of guitar parts and general structures of the songs. From there Omar, Eric, and Joey will add their touches to them. In the end we all collaborate to make the best sounding song that we can. Everyone will put input on each other's parts and opinions on how things should go. We're all very open to everyone's ideas.
What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?
Blink-182 has always been a huge inspiration to myself, Joey, and Omar. Personally, they're the reason I even started playing music. Eric has always been that way with Bayside, and they are also a favorite with of all of us. More current bands would probably include The Dangerous Summer, Chunk! No, Captain Chunk, Toe, Comeback Kid, Living With Lions, A Day To Remember, New Found Glory, etc. etc. There's too many bands to name, and we all listen to so much music it's hard to tell what is actually being reflected into our jams.
Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?
Same as the question above, for me it was definitely Blink.
What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …
We always try to get a good full body stretch on. It's kind of important and gets us loosened up to play. Also plenty of vocal warm up exercises. Very essential especially when we're touring.
What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?
I would say traveling to Japan this past October. It was actually our second trip out there, but the first with our new vocalist Joey. We finally have a full line up again, and the response was even a little bit better than the last trip. We're just lucky that Mizuki and Ice Grill$ Records in Japan gave us such an amazing opportunity. We are extremely humbled by it. It feels good to be back in action after that short hiatus we had while looking for a singer.
If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
A Day To Remember and Rise Against would be amazing. Chunk! No, Captain Chunk because they are awesome and Bert mixed both of our EP's. NOFX because they are one of our favorite punk bands and they know how to have a good time. And State Champs, their music rules. Obviously there's so many more to add but we'll keep it short and sweet.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
We are putting out a five song acoustic EP featuring 3 covers from Everything I Used To Trust. Should be out in February, we'll give more details soon. But everyone should stay posted, we will be announcing more tours and music and we are just getting started :)
