Show Review: Die Antwoord (Pittsburgh, PA)

So, you've been around the internet, seen everything and now you can brag about it. Then, out of the blue, you hear there's a band called Die Antwoord and they're apparently, "something you can't miss". You check their tour dates and it turns out they are coming here. After you check out a couple of their songs and go to buy tickets...and they're sold out?!

Yes, the rumors are true, Die Antwoord sold out their entire last US tour and they came to Pittsburgh for their first time on a non-tour date. And Kill The Music had a chance to catch them live. Here's a couple of highlights from the concerts:

1. DJ Hi-Tek

If you don't know who DJ Hi-Tek is, he is the main DJ for Die Antwoord. Usually the DJ never seems that notable, unless they are the main act, but Hi-Tek is not to be reckoned with. He was first to come out and introduce himself with a song named "DJ Hi-Tek Rules". This immediately hyped up the crowd way more than the opening DJ (which wasn't even notable for this review) ever could.

2. Costume changes and stage setup

This concert was so dynamic with all of the costume changes they had. Every single song (even the encore) had a costume change. All of the costumes were exactly what you'd expect to see at a Die Antwoord concert. The set up for the stage even spoke for Die Antwoord, showing off what seems to be a rendition of the "Enter The Ninja" music video backdrop.

3. The crowd at a Die Antwoord concert are very supportive

No one has ever just stumbled into a Die Antwoord concert. Every one there was a devout fan and I even spoke to one couple who travel from New York to see them for the night. The crowd knew every word that Ninja and Yolandi sang and barely anyone had their phone out. It was one of the friendliest atmopsheres I've ever been in. The only complaint I have is the amount of pushing when Ninja would come down to the pit.

4. The LED screen behind Die Antwoord

The screen behind them for the whole performance really pulled the whole experience together. There was never a dull moment with the screen which was showing music videos they had done as well as other explict images. (such as a little green alien "shooting off" everywhere). With the screen being there, it really showed just how weird and dynamic of performers they are.

Die Antwoord is not a band to be missed. Take a listen to the song below and feast your ears on something you are sure to either fall in love with or hate forever. I'm giving this concert a 10 out of 10 stars for bringing such a once in a lifetime experience. If Die Antwoord ever tours near your town, definitely buy a ticket immediately (As it's sure to be a sellout).
