Album Review: Shinedown's "Planet Zero"

Shinedown have officially released their new album “Planet Zero" and it is a thought provoking piece of work that really packs a punch.

Musically, the effort runs the gamut from hard rock to soft rock. Songs like “No Sleep Tonight,” "Dead Don't Die" and "Clueless And Dramatic" will appease fans who enjoy the heavier side of the band, whereas songs like “Dysfunctional You,” "Hope," and "Daylight" will appease those who enjoy their slower balladly side. As if that wasn't enough, everything is also tied together by synth-driven interludes that add another element to the group's overall sound.

Lyrically, the album deals with the current state of the world and the concept of thinking for oneself. It urges people to break free from the bonds of conformity to formulate their own opinions instead of giving in to controlling forces. This concept of control and herd mentality can be seen on songs such as the title track, which includes phrases like "they're cancelling your feelings" and “America Burning," which references being “woke but not awake." It is even clear on a brief interlude like "Delete," which warns you to "comply" after "showing signs of individual thought and free will."

All in all, "Planet Zero" is an invigorating dose of modern rock that seeks to send a warning about a cultural climate that limits free expression.

Fans can purchase the album HERE. As previously reported, the band will also be livestreaming a performance from Daddy Kool Records in St. Petersburg, FL later today (July 1).
