Defiler vocalist Jake Pelzl takes us through the band’s new record, Nematocera. Preorder the album (if you haven’t already) and read the descriptions below.

Lucky 38
I wrote the music and lyrics to this track in jail - I wrote down a little key for each pattern and note and scribbled down the lyrics. It was basically my testament to take over the world as soon as I was out - and to explain to everyone that there is much, much more to us than Cryomancer.

The Regulators
This one is different. The music is almost reminiscent of a hard rock track. It’s very verse/chorus driven, and then the end of the track completely explodes with an eerie lead over a crushing breakdown.

Octobortion
This song deals with making really fucking hard decisions that could greatly impact your life, and the consequences that follow. One path can take you toward redemption, and another, darker path, can lead to temporary satisfaction, but a horrible aftermath.

Movin’ On Up the Nation’s Chain
I love this song. It speaks from the perspective of someone going up against a myriad of tough obstacles in their life, and reaching a point where determination alone isn’t enough, and they feel like they know they won’t come out on top. But they keep going because they know they have no other choice.

Brick Killed a Guy
It’s about the hypothesized technological singularity that could befall our race someday soon - and my personal interpretation of how it could happen. It’s spoken from the remorseful vantage point of the humans responsible, and the perspective switches to the artificial intelligence towards the end.

Walk In The Glow
This track is special, and contains a lot of the different elements showcased throughout Nematocera. It has the heavy, pummeling verses with the melancholy, harmonized leads under it - the technical bridge with crazy guitar patterns - and the melodic choruses with clean vocals and a driving, spooky hook.

The Subway

Straight up love song. I wrote this about my girlfriend like two years ago, and knew it would be a very different element that I was excited to add into the slew of emotions on the album.

Elmo St Peters
You know how everyone calls us Deathcore? Well, this entire song was written without using one open note on the lowest string (the breakdown in the song is actually on the 2nd.) and the riffs in this song almost remind me of something Rise Against would play. It’s the poppiest track on the album.

Iconoclast
An expansion on the idea behind lucky 38, this track is me basically explaining that you can try to pick us apart until the cows come home you will never fucking know who we are.

Twinrova
In the Zelda franchise, Twinrova is the sorceress of fire and ice. That’s what this track is. It spans many different feelings and vibes. There’s a very somber, longing clean vocal line that opens and closes the track, and I think fans will love it.

Nuclear Anomaly
My personal favorite, this one closes the book of Pangaea. It is me finally letting go of all the demons that fucked with me back then, and laughing about how much I love my life now.

Metamora
Straight up brutal mosh. This was a song where we wanted everyone who was still standing to really hit the fucking floor.

Nematocera
The instrumental title track is one of the most interesting points of the album. Acoustic strumming and picking throughout, it slowly builds to a huge, epic conclusion that closes the album in the best way possible - it leaves you wondering what we could possibly do next.

The Hives will be the musical guest on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on Friday October 5, performing the worldwide television premiere of “Take Back The Toys,” a song from their lauded new album Lex Hives. The appearance comes as the band gears up for the second leg of their West Coast tour, kicking off October 6 in Pioneertown, CA and marking the last time the band will perform in the U.S. this year. In addition, Last Call with Carson Daly will air two songs from their recent set at The Wiltern on Monday, October 8.

The upcoming dates are the latest on The Hives’ world tour which included powerful sets at Coachella earlier this year, as well as Reading & Leeds and Jay-Z’s Made In America Festival just last month. The band will continue on to Europe for a headlining run before heading to Australia to finish out the rest of the year. See below for all touring details.

The Hives’ live shows are widely praised, with SPIN proclaiming “this Swedish quintet remains one of the most riveting live rock bands of the last dozen years,” anointing Howlin” Pelle Almqvist as “one of the greatest frontmen in rock.” Their new album Lex Hives has seen similar worldwide accolades. NME declares “let it be said that Lex Hives is amazing,” and Q Magazine's 4-star review asserts “Lex Hives fizzes with the energy of a debut album, the quintet emphatically back to what they do best.” Likewise, The Independent states, “if Lex Hives has one fault, it’s that it makes you want to switch it off, go straight out and see the Hives live,” and Entertainment Weekly proclaims “the Hives have returned to remind us the Swedes do it better.”

The Hives are Howlin’ Pelle Almqvist, Nicholaus Arson, Chris Dangerous, Dr. Matt Destruction, and Vigilante Carlstroem.

In 1999, actor David Strickland, best known for his role on the NBC sitcom “Suddenly Susan,” committed suicide in room 20 of the Oasis Motel in Las Vegas. More than a decade later, Zak Bagans, the host and lead investigator for the hit TV series Ghost Adventures, spent hours in that very room attempting to establish communication with Strickland’s departed soul. The results of that investigation can be heard on the track “Room 20" from NecroFusion, the upcoming album from Bagans and musical partner, Lords of Acid’s Praga Khan, due out October 23rd.

"Room 20" is now streaming in full on Youtube, as well as a recent segment on TMZ about the track.

According to Bagans, “After hours of recording sessions, I felt a sudden, intense presence of energy, and I knew I was not alone.  I began communicating with mind-blowing responses.  One of the responses I got was when I said ‘hello’ to Strickland, and he replied ‘hi, Zak.’  I asked if he could hear me and he said ‘yeah.’  At this point, I was getting intelligent responses, one after the other.  I asked how many other spirits were present, and a female voice began shooting off numbers for me - ‘seven, eight’ - at which time I asked ‘Do you see other dead people?’  And Strickland’s voice came through again, telling me he ‘sees the Lord.’  I asked him if he knew where he was, and said ‘Oasis.’  This was one of the most powerful spirit communication sessions I have ever conducted.”

Much more information on NecroFusion can be found at Zak’s official site at zakbagans.com.

Welsh rockers Future of the Left are returning to the U.S. for a nationwide fall tour in support of their new album, The Plot Against Common Sense, released earlier this summer on Xtra Mile Recordings. Kicking off October 30th in Baltimore, the 3-week run in support of Andrew Jackson Jihad will bring the band to Chicago, Los Angeles, Detroit, Philadelphia and more. More dates will be announced soon!

The Plot Against Common Senses release marked the band’s first full-length album release since 2009’s Travels With Myself And Another (though they teased their rabid fanbase with the all too brief EP Polymers Are Forever last fall).  It was also the first release with UK-based Xtra Mile Recordings, home to Frank Turner, Against Me!, and more.

The album was widely praised upon its release, garnering acclaim from the likes of SPIN, Rolling Stone, Pitchfork and more. Rolling Stone premiered the video for first single “I Am The Least Of Your Problems”. Similarly, SPIN premiered the video for “Sheena is a T-shirt Salesman" earlier this year.

Recently expanded to a four piece, Future Of The Left's ranks include former Mclusky members Andrew Falkous (vocals and guitar) and Jack Egglestone (drums) as well as ex-Million Dead bass player Julia Ruzicka and Jimmy Watkins (guitar).

One of hard rock/heavy metal’s fastest rising new bands, Candlelight Red, have just announced tour dates with Fozzy. The band continue to inch their way towards a big breakthrough, as evidenced by their just-issued Demons EP (which was produced by Sevendust’s Morgan Rose). They’ve also just unveiled a new, striking video for the title track, which has been hitting hard and climbing the charts at active rock radio.

In August and September, Candlelight Red killed it as part of the multi-band Rockstar Energy Drink UPROAR Festival, which also featured such acts as Shinedown, Godsmack, Staind, among many others. The band will now hit the road with Fozzy from October 26th through November 4th (schedule below).

Although barely a month old, the ‘Demons’ EP has been racking up rave reviews, such as from puregrainaudio.com, which said, “the heavy stuff is really heavy, the melodic stuff is real melodic and the tunes really beg to be played at full volume.”For more on the band, visit their official site as well as their Facebook and Twitter.

Tour Dates with Fozzy:
Oct 26 Ollie’s Point / Revolution Amityville, NY
Oct 27 Chameleon Club Lancaster, PA
Oct 28 Peabody’s Cleveland, OH
Oct 29 The Mod Club Theatre Toronto, Canada
Oct 30 Bogies Albany, NY
Nov 01 Empire Springfield, VA
Nov 02 Hooligans Jacksonville, NC
Nov 03 The Rock Shop Fayetteville, NC
Nov 04 Ziggy’s Winston Salem, NC

Reveal the Revenants is a progressive influenced metal band based out of Cumming, Georgia. With a haunting name and sound influence to match it Reveal the Revenants looks to truly capture and portray emotion through music. Taking influence from bands such as Cynic, Veil of Maya, Tool, Born of Osiris, and Periphery. They have formed a sound unlike much of what you’ve heard, mixing groove’s, melody, and aggressive pounding riffage with a high energy performance and a pure love for music. We chatted with new vocalist joining the band, working on new music and more!

For the record, what’s your name and what do you do in the band?

Justin Allen, vocals.

What was the very first concert you attended and how much of an impact did that have on you musically?

The first concert I attended was a tour w/ Into Eternity, Epica, and Symphony X was headlining. I think that show was the show that made me realize I wanted to tour and play music for a living. I had just started getting into doing vocals but that show inspired me to follow through and practice as much as possible.

When did you first meet the guys in RTR?

Brandon Tolbert, who has been one of my close friends for the year or so joined Reveal the Revenants and played with them for a few months. I went to a few of their shows and supported them, and my old band Through Redemption played a show with them at Swayze’s.

So how did you come to be in RTR?

Well, things were not going well in my old band, our guitarist was leaving and I just wasn’t feeling it anymore. Alex and I had joked around about me replacing their vocalist Stephen Bryne because he is moving to Savannah for college but because of the distance I never really considered it. I had been trying to start a heavily progressive influenced band since Neil Davis showed me Opeth a few years ago, I slowly started to realize that RtR was my dream band and I couldn’t pass it up. Zak who was one of the guitarist in Through Redemption came to the band along with me. Things have been golden since then.

What’s going to happen with the other members of Through Redemption?

I don’t really keep up with the members, well other than Brendan our drummer. He and Blake are working on a traditional death metal project, and from the way Brendan speaks it sounds pretty promising. As far I Matt goes, he decided that playing shows wasn’t for him. He doesn’t like how venues treat the bands. I think he enrolled back into college. Zak is in Reveal the Revenants with me. Brett and I don’t talk. He accused me of stealing equipment from him then found his equipment a few hours later.

At what point in the album-writing process were you brought in?

When I joined RtR, I came in while they were in studio recording the demo we just released. There wasn’t much vocal work already wrote, so I took what Stephen had and added to/changed a lot of it. I was in the band for about a month or two before we went back and tracked everything.

What news can you give us about your upcoming album?

We are in the process of writing a 4-5 song EP. We will be returning to In Motions Recordings to work with Bradd Schlosser.

What is the vibe like within the band now?

As of right now the vibe is great. We all get along really well. The last two shows we play have been two of the funnest shows I have ever played. We are playing November 30th with ISSUES (ex-Woe, Is Me members)

How does the new material sound?

The new material is hard to describe. I personally feel like with each song we write together we one up ourselves each time. Our last two songs we wrote have been my two favorites. Both are very melodic and extremely bouncy. I believe we are writing stuff that not only musicians can really appreciate but people who have no knowledge of music can dig as well.

What was your experience like working with Bradd Schlosser?

Bradd Schlosser is by far the best recording engineer I have worked with. He is extremely professional and he makes great suggestions as far as what sounds good on the recording. Bradd is very honest, which is a good trait in a recording engineer. Because if it sounds terrible Bradd lets you know and then helps you fix it. I feel like if we would have went to any other studio around here our demo would not have turned out as well as it has. I honestly think if we were to get signed tomorrow and we were able to pick any studio to record our debut album, it would be at In Motions.

It’s about mid-way through the year. What albums have you really been enjoying lately from 2012?

Oh goodness, there have been so many good albums this year. To list a few I would have to say; The Contortionist’s album Intrinsic, Veil of Maya’s album Eclipse, Between the Buried and Me’s Parallax II, and I’m really looking forward to the new The Haarp Machine.

Dream tour; what four other bands would you play with and what would you call the tour?

My dream tour would be The Contortionist, Born of Osiris, Opeth, and Between the Buried and Me. It would have to be a tour through Europe. I have no idea what I would name it. The name would have to be extremely cheesy though.

The-All American Rejects have teamed up with their partners at Petfinder.com for an adorable new clip about guitarist Nick Wheeler and his adopted Boston Terrier mix, Dexter. The video, entitled “Dex’s Day Off,” follows Nick and Dex during the band’s recent day off in Richmond, VA, and includes colorful commentary from Dex himself.

The Rejects have also teamed up with Petfinder for Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month, and are giving away a prize pack to one lucky fan that includes a phone call from Nick, a signed photo of him and Dex, and a signed copy of the band’s latest album, Kids In The Street. Fans can enter on Petfinder’s Facebook page to win.
