For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to? How long has the band been around?
Jake Adkins: Wake Up Hate has been around since late December of last year. Prior to this band our guitarist Matt was in a group called Exotype. Triston and I were also in a band together before Wake Up Hate, but the name isn't worth mentioning since we never actually put out any music or did anything.
What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?
Jake Adkins: I don't know if the name has much of a story to tell, honestly. We like angry and dark lyrics. We liked the word "hate" a lot. We were tossing around all sorts of different names with the word "hate" in it. We had narrowed it down to two that we really liked. I believe it was Andrew Wade who helped us finally settle on Wake Up Hate. I think it suits us well.
Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?
Jake Adkins: All the lyrics on the EP were written by myself, with help from Matt and Andrew Wade (producer for A Day to Remember, Wage War, Attila). The instrumentals were mostly written by Matt and I. We actually have been ghostwriting together for rock and metal bands for a long time. That's kinda where the idea of creating a band came from. We got so good at writing together, we figured we might as well see what kind of music we could make for ourselves. We also had the pleasure of working with Kile Odell and Nick Scott on a few tracks on the EP.
I'd say the main topics are your base emotions: love, hate, anger, depression, loneliness, etc. We tend to be dark in our lyrical content and try to have real meaning in each song. I don't think that's ever going to change.
Jake Adkins: What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?
There's way too many to list here. But we've actually made a Spotify playlist filled with all the artists who inspire us.
Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?
Jake Adkins: For me it was a high school battle of the bands. I was actually in middle school at the time, but my neighbor invited me to go with him. I remember watching a metal band called Adonai. I'll never forget the feeling of watching them live. I knew without a doubt that music was what I wanted to do in life.
What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, etc
Jake Adkins: I have a vocal warm-up routine I do every single day, whether I plan on singing or not. To be honest, we haven't played our first show yet so it's hard to answer this question at this time.
What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?
Jake Adkins: In the few months we've been a band, this is also hard to answer. I'd say our debut was our biggest highlight. We haven't stopped growing and gaining new fans since we first started, so I'm excited to see what comes next.
If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
Jake Adkins: We like Breaking Benjamin, Sevendust, Korn, Bring Me The Horizon, Architects and there's probably more but these are the ones that come to mind right away.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Jake Adkins: Go buy and stream our debut EP "Deep Sleep"!
