For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to To The City? How long has the band been around?
The Winchestertonfieldville Iowa School Band and The Wiggles. The initial talks of the band began in July 2015, and we were in the studio cutting the first few songs 2 months after.
What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?
We love cities, honestly. We're about the furthest thing from country guys you can imagine. We found ourselves frequently saying "When are we going to the next city?", so when we were discussing naming the project and the aspirations we had for it, it made sense. We had kicked around calling it "Take Me To The City", but decided that was a little too long.
Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?
The songs are usually started by Mr. Voice, and then after cutting a demo, we all add our touches to them to give it our personality. The lyrics for the songs are all based off of real experiences. We never want to write a story about something that could be. We've all been through enough bullshit that there shouldn't ever be a lack of resources for the music. "We Have Tonight" was written to be an anthem for people who have anxiety about changing things in their life. The song was really about all of us collectively deciding to write music we really wanted to write, as opposed to what the other bands we are or have been involved with kind of dictated we should be writing. I think everyone will be pretty surprised at what the next few songs sound like.
What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?
We're all across the board in our musical tastes. Classical has been a big influence on us, because of the way the orchestrations are in some of the songs. Lately, we've all been really digging the newer Mariana's Trench record. The production on it is lit.
Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?
I wouldn't say there's one in particular for anyone of us that was the turning point, but every one that we've been to has definitely kept us motivated to stay on top of our game. Mr. Guitar has an unhealthy obsession with Kanye West that he's currently in therapy for. We're here for you, G. You can get through this.
What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …
Generally we look in the mirror at our naked bodies and tell ourselves that it doesn't matter if we're not sex icons, because our mommies still love us.
What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?
Well, we dropped the music video to 30k views in the first day. That was pretty awesome. We wanted to write an amazing record, first. If the band never publicly released anything, we at least wanted to know that we wrote the best record of our careers, and in the long run, I think that'll be our biggest accomplishment. The accolades and attention are nice, but in the end, you need to do music for yourself. You need to make it like a diary.
If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
My shotgun answer is Queen and The Beatles, because who wouldn't want to play to 100,000 people a night. After reconsidering the fact that we'd be opening up for 2 of the biggest bands in the history of the human race, we might say someone like The 1975 or All Time Low. I think we all secretly would love to open up for Michael Jackson, but that's also going to fall into the category of "Horrible ideas".
Is there anything else you would like to add?
