Unsigned Spotlight: The Northmen

The Northmen is a metal/hard rock quartet with a mind to conquer like those of their namesake. With a combination of heart pounding drums, dual guitar harmonies, aggressive riffs, and a healthy nod to the guitar solo- The Northmen set out to achieve one thing; a unique, original sound with relentless energy.

Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band:

Matthew Gregory-drums

Alix Beitz- guitar

Jeremy Lawlor- guitar/lead singer

Brendan Laverty- bass/vox

For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to The Northmen? How long has the band been around?

The Northmen: We have been around since 2015, myself and Brendan used to be in a local cover band on Watertown, NY and Alix used to be in a local band in his home town in Malone, NY.

What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?

The Northmen: We happen to be from a significantly northern part of NewYork, so it seemed fitting. But, we were also pretty big fans of the “Song of Ice and Fire” book series (Game of Thrones). A pretty common theme is that of the people of the North. The Northmen was not just a people from true north but a culture. Rugged and weathered. Aggressive and fierce. We liked that a lot. We imagined one day when people bought tickets to our show, they would say “The Northmen are coming...”. Seemed pretty Catchy. Like we are invading.

Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?

The Northmen: Honestly, nothing is super planned out. We all individually write parts for songs and we do it as a whole. It’s just what comes to the mind.

What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?

The Northmen: Avenged Sevenfold, Metallica, Alter Bridge, Bullet for My Valentine, AC/DC, Guns N’ Roses.

Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?

The Northmen: Metallica has a massive influence on our band

What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, etc

The Northmen: We all generally get warmed up on our instruments and get mentally prepared. Jeremy tends to go for a little run beforehand. Other than that it’s all about the waiting game.

What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?

The Northmen: Opening up for Scott Stapp. We have all been a fan of Scott Stapp, but Brendan is a super fan. Scott is his idol.

If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?

The Northmen: All of our main influences!!!

Is there anything else you would like to add?

The Northmen: Expect to see a lot more of us touring! Check out our Facebook and Instagram page for info on upcoming shows!
