Vik Kovacs, the sole architect of Telling Secrets is the product of Eastern European blood and a British upbringing. Hailing from Manchester, England, but living in Los Angeles, Kovacs is releasing his brand of emo tinged modern rock bangers under the name Telling Secrets for the past two years.
Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.
Telling Secrets is more of an artist project in that Vik Kovacs is the songwriter and has all of the creative input with the backline changing depending on what is needed.
For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to Telling Secrets? How long has the band been around?
The first band I ever started was called Distal Keys and we played acoustic indie/folk sort of music, then I was in a blues/cover band called Station Road which really helped sink my teeth into performing and later I released my very first attempt at writing harder alternative music.
What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?
I was talking to my friend, and vocal teacher, Matt about band names and we both had a massive list. He had a really cool one which was Fortune Teller which I loved but it was taken. So while I was writing my first song "Secret Lies" I liked the lyric "we could tell each other secrets" so I thought I'll go with Telling Secrets if I still liked it the next day, and I did so I went with it.
Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?
I do (Vik), I don't really know anymore. I think the first 6 songs are about direct personal experiences but as time goes on and I'm writing more I feel like I'm detaching myself from myself a little more and writing in a more fictional and imaginative way.
What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?
Rain City Drive, Nothing More and Bad Omens
Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?
I think I've wanted to be in a band or be some kind of rockstar ever since I saw a picture of Slash.
What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …
Before any kind of performance whether it's in the studio or for a music video I will drink the biggest red bull I can find. It actually helps me sing, I know it's not supposed to but it does
What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?
Being on the Amazon editorial "Best New Bands" list was pretty cool, also surpassing 100,000 streams on Spotify alone is great but really this is just the very beginning.
If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
Falling In Reverse and Rain City Drive. RCD because I know the guys and they are awesome so the vibes would be next level. FIR because they are the best in the game right now.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
