Unsigned Spotlight: SPiN

Comparisons to iconic bands like Queen, The Cars, and Muse can be hard to live up to, but Philly-based SPiN continually earns such great accolades with each release.

Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.

E - Lead Vocals / Guitar

Hank - Guitars / Vocals

Jim - Keyboards / Synth Bass / Vocals

Lou - Drums

For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to SPiN? How long has the band been around? What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?

We were all part of a cover band named Spin the Bottle.  E and Jim started playing music in high school together with Hank’s brother and have all been together since - SPiN released our first album I think in 2010 or so.

Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?

We all write.  Someone will bring up an idea and we’ll all work with it.  I hope the ideas and themes change over time. Otherwise we’re not growing as songwriters.

What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?

Muse has been an inspiration for us all I think.  But we all have different tastes so that’s really different for all of us. Classic bands like The Beatles, Eagles, Guns N Roses, Nirvana, all factor in somewhere.

Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?

I don’t think so.  I mean I think we all remember our first Concert but we all have different influences so that’s different for all of us.  As we said earlier, we’ve been doing this one way or another since high school, so the music bug hit early for all of us.

What do you do to prepare for a show?

Drink.  Oh, and we rehearse for the show weeks prior too (also while drinking).

What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?

Sold out arena shows with multi-platinum artists, playing SXSW, our almost 10 million views on YouTube, our music that’s on hit TV shows, they are all equally awesome achievements for an indie band like us.

If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?

Beatles, bc they’re the freakin Beatles.  Muse, bc I think we would have something their fans might dig.  Van Halen, bc Hank wants to talk shop with Eddie.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Yes.  Stream, download, or otherwise procure our music and let us know what you think.  We are always trying to reach new people and continue to evolve our sound.
