For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to Silver Relics? How long has the band been around?
Alex Sepassi: Of course! We've all been in a number of bands/projects. Mark and Brian are the current rhythm section of The Jesus and Mark Chain. Mark also writes and fronts his band Mark Crozer and The Rels. Brian's also a part of Fountains of Wayne and The Posies to name a couple. And Hitomi drums in two other New York-based bands called Hard Nips and Rockaway Bitch. I'm a fan of every single one of these bands.
What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?
AS: Relics was inspired by the Pink Floyd compilation from 1971. I've always loved the name and what it stands for. No plans of changing that or our name whatsoever!
Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?
AS: I do, and the themes definitely vary just like we do. In fact, that's a theme of the new songs in itself. They're based on a lot of what has happened over the past couple of years through my perspective. The basis of my songs is typically philosophical and psychological. I like studying humans and the effects of the environment around us. The topics are in a constant evolutionary state just as we are.
What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?
AS: Great question! I've been listening to TVAM's debut album “Psychic Data,” Working Men's Club's self-titled debut and Goat Girls’ sophomore release “On All Fours.” I highly recommend three. I appreciate how unique they are. Plus, you can really hear the energy coming through the speakers. That's exactly what I like.
Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?
AS: To be honest, I just started playing guitar at a young age and eventually found myself writing my own songs and being in bands throughout my life. I've been inspired by so many classic rock artists that it seemed inevitable that I would find myself in this place talking about music with you!
What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …
AS: I definitely enjoy a good stretch and a light workout if there's time. Meditation is the most important exercise before shows. It's easy to get caught up in the excitement of the night and taking a few minutes to concentrate on breathing is what I believe to be most helpful.
What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?
AS: Our first tour in Ireland and the UK after our debut release was a definite highlight. This band is heavily influenced by so many great bands and artists from that part of the world, so it was a very important tour for us. I'm excited to do it again!
If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
AS: Haha loaded question. The Jesus and Mary Chain for obvious reasons. I'd also love to perform with bands like Foals, Django Django and Johnny Marr.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
AS: Thank you so much for having us! Our sophomore record is in the works and expects a 2021 release date. I also just want to say thank you to our fans for listening and being there with us. You are why we're here!
