For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to Patient Sixty-Seven? How long has the band been around?
For me personally this is my first band that’s ever played shows and recorded music. The band formed in 2014 as me and our guitarist at the time wanted an outlet to record and write music. We weren’t really sure at the time whether we would play shows or what would come of it.
Come early 2015 we had a fully fledged line up - we had enough songs to put out an initial EP and we’ve been lucky enough to play with some incredible bands in the last few years!
What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?
We’ve never changed the name, no. The origin of it comes from Shutter Island - probably my favorite movie or at least it was at the time. We were throwing around names in the middle of a recording session and I just threw it out there. Dylan liked it, so did I - and the name kinda just stuck!
Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?
I pen majority of the lyrics, so thematically their is generally a parallel to something I’ve been experiencing at the time of writing that song. The main themes of late have really just been about diving into dealing with hardship, different types of setbacks and things holding you back. It’s been an experience and our last EP which we released early March - definitely puts a spotlight on things I’ve never really spoken out about before.
Musically, I handle most of the programming duties - while Rory, Declan and our previous guitarist Dylan will mesh their own ideas and influences to help forward the songs.
What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?
It’s different for every member of the band - but for me at the time of writing and recording, a lot of Bad Omens, Outline in Colour, the Bad Chapter and Jamie’s Elsewhere. Bands that bring a high level of energy to their music and it feels like the shackles are really off! I’ll listen to a ton of different bands on any given day though - so it’s constantly changing.
Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?
I’ve said previously if I had to nail it down to a certain sub genre or artist, it’s probably the pop punk bands I loved listening to in high school. Blink 182, All Time Low, The Maine. Their whole approach and the fun they were having while doing it really made me want to be apart of the music world.
What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …
A lot of warming up with my voice, I’m honestly still learning how to best manage it without pushing myself too hard! And yeah it’s definitely important to warm up, to stay nimble on stage while you’re moving around. I’ve avoided it in the past and my neck and spine has been very sore in the days to come!
What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?
The ‘Four Walls’ EP I mentioned earlier. I’m incredibly proud of the release and I really hope people get the chance to check it out!
If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
It’s far too late now with the festival closing down as a full event - but the idea of just doing a Warped Tour would be so so exciting! So many bands dream of doing that run, and it’d just be an incredible experience I have no doubt.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Please stay in Cleveland, Lebron.
