For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to One for The Braves? How long has the band been around?
One for The Braves started back in May of 2013 and is the first band myself (Adam) and Avery were ever a part of. Brian comes from a few other bands, he was in a band called The Underline and Reckless Serenade, Sean came to us after his first band City at Dawn broke up, and Nick plays drums in another local Poughkeepsie band called Sound of a Smirk, when we were in the market for a bass player he mentioned he played and he's been a part of this ragtag group of individuals ever since.
What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?
The name One for The Braves is a reference to the band Good Riddance, who's song of the same name was a big inspiration to me at the time we started this band. I felt alone in struggling with the weight of the world and in Russ Rankin telling whoever the subject of the song is that he is always by their side, it reminded me that there is also someone by my side as well when things seem like too much to handle on my own.
Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?
All of our songs focus on experiencing life, but not just one specific aspect of it, every part. Struggles with family and failed relationships, dealing with anxiety and depression, or even accepting that in life things aren't always going to go your way and that you need to keep moving forward regardless of the outcome. As long as there is life to experience we'll keep writing about it. As far as the song writing process goes, we all are very involved. We all bring ideas to the table and work together to build off those ideas to create the song that we are all imagining.
What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?
Two constants for inspiration I would have to say are The Wonder Years and With the Punches, but as of late we've been experimenting around with different styles, from some New Found Glory sounding stuff to some Knuckle Puck sounding stuff.
Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?
The idea to start a band came from the band Strung Out. definitely my favorite band. I started listening to them when I was about 15 and was immediately in love with them and the idea of starting a band. The Idea to start One For The Braves came from The Wonder Years and the approach that they took towards the genre. They were a breath of fresh air in the genre and I loved everything that followed that very first "I'm not sad anymore" in My Last Semester.
What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, etc …
This is a good question in the fact that there is no constant routine any of us have to get ready for a show. Usually, I warm up in the car just singing along to songs and then when we sound check I usually sing a little bit of a random song (recently it's been Skee-lo's I wish) and then when the first song starts I get in the zone and do what I need to do.
What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?
We have been around for a few years now, working with other musicians to build a band and sound where everyone is on the same page and proud of the product we produced. With that in mind I'd have to say the biggest highlight of our career so far is our most recent EP Does Anybody Honestly Care all five of us put a lot of heart and time into creating that album and are all extremely proud of the results. At the end of the day, we have all the fun in the world playing these songs with each other and writing new ones to share with the world.
If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
Definitely Less than Jake. They are one of my favorite bands and they put one of the most stellar live shows that I have ever seen. They sound epic start to finish and the energy and crowd involvement is outstanding.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
I sell houses, let me sell you a house!
