For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to Oh White Mare? How long has the band been around?
Sam and I played in a band prior called Columba, which was a kinda Brit-rock act. OWM has been around in some form for 5/6 years....with the early days spent writing and recording (as opposed to many live shows).
What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?
The bands name originated from a guitar Jack White was given in the documentary Ït Might Get Loud'. It was called the White Mare, and we just added the Oh to it, to make it sound less metal band. The band has always been called Oh White Mare, but due to a line up change around 3yrs ago, there have been two iterations of the band (where there was a bit of a stylistic shift).
Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?
The structures of the songs (and lyrics) are written by Ross, with Brody and Sam adding colour / parts / changes, to make the final product truly OWM. In recent times the theme of a lot of the lyrical content has been around the notion of modern love. OWM had a song / EP called All The Modern Lovers released in 2017 - with there been some degree of fascination how the business of relationships has morphed in recent years
What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?
Alex Turner is a huge influence, as is Josh Homme. It is is both the range & evolution of their sound and song craft that draws OWM to the music they write / bands they play in.
Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?
The band Oasis was certainly something that inspired myself (Ross) to be in a band. Is was the influence they had on popular culture and seeing how their amazing songs brought people together, which really resonated. They don't make rockstars like that anymore.
What do you do to prepare for a show?
Any flexing, exercises, ect …Nothing special on our end.....just hope we feel well enough rehearsed!!
What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?
Probably having our single Outsiders played on KROQ, which is the iconic rock radio station based in Los Angles. The famous radio DJ Rodney Bingenhimer was a fan and spun it a bunch. He was the guy who played Nirvana for the first time on radio.
If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
Past bands it would be Oasis.....just to simply experience how hectic it would have been. In the modern times, I'd love to tour with the Arctic Monkeys, and try pick the brains of Alex Turner a little...
