For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to New View?
This has been our band since day 1!
How long has the band been around?
We started in 2012 playing blink-182 covers. Then, in 2014 we all moved from our northern Minnesota hometowns to minneapolis and started to take our music a bit more seriously. After a few years of self-deleopment and a whole bunch of learning here we are today releasing our new EP!
What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?
When we were in middle school we had to take a class where we had a project that involved designing business cards for a business that we made up. Matt came up with a company called "New View aircraft and automobile design". When we started we went with that name because we needed something to use. We were 17, and we didnt care, we just wanted to play. We never thought it would stick anyways. We never ended up getting around to coming up with something better, and now it's too late to go back.
Who writes your songs?
Kyle and Matt write most of the lyrical content for the songs. Most of the time the guitar parts get put down as demos in really simple forms from Kyle, then we sit in a room together and work them out a bit more in detail for the song.
What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?
Most of our songs are written about our angst with relationships, or people we are upset with. I'm sure that over time we start to drift away from this as spend more time talking about our lives and everyday encounters with society.
What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?
Currently we are really inspired by Motion City Soundtrack, Alkaline Trio, Knuckle Puck, Tiny Moving Parts, Save The Lost Boys, Handguns, Hawthorne Heights, Jimmy Eat World, Sugarcult, Trophy Eyes, Sum 41, Blink-182, and Foo Fighters.
Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?
This answer is a little different for all of us, but if we had to pick one it would probably by Blink-182 and Foo fighters for artists. They're really the bands that brought us together when we were younger. If it wasn't for a mutal love of those artists we might not be playing together today.
What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …
We do some dumb stretches back stage that probably dont actually do anything, but it's the thought that counts right? We actually have a stage joke about doing hot pilates backstage after the show. No one ever shows up to join us for the session though. We can't figure out why...
What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?
We played a show with Hawthorne Heights, MEST, The Ataris, and Handguns when they came through on the Three Headed Monstour in 2016 at The Amsterdam. It was a super cool show, and a great night. On paper that looks like our biggest accomplishment, but for us it's probably our new EP. It's something we worked on for a long time and we really feel like we stepped up to the plate with this one. We've gotten a lot of great feedback on it and we're excited to see what comes along with it.
If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
The original Blink line up would be badass, but they say never meet your heroes right? but we'd have to say Tiny Moving Parts would have to be on the bill. If one day on tour is even 1/10th as cool as the stuff they did in their music video for "Headache" it would be the coolest tour ever. Motion City Soundtrack would also be on the list. Being able to see those guys play every night would be a dream come true. Finally we'd want to go on the road with our friends in A Better Hand and Ithomiid. They're bands that we've been playing shows with for a few years now and we love those dudes!
Is there anything else you would like to add?
We want to thank whoever read this for taking the time! we really appreciate it! you rock! but on top of that we just want to add that people should check out the lyric video for our song "So Stupid" (link below) and keep their eyes peeled for us around the Twin Cities!
