My Silent Bravery symbolizes persistence, perseverance and inner strength to overcome obstacles in the face of adversity.
Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.
Matthew Wade – singer songwriter and recording artist.
For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to My Silent Bravery? How long has the band been around?
I put out my first demo in 2005 and performed under various names until around 2010 when I started performing under the name My Silent Bravery.
What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?
The name came about because I was touring under another band name with the initials MSB for a while. Around 2010, my manager at the time suggested we change the band name for marketability and for Google ability. I chose to go with a more commercial name. I wanted to keep the MSB in place, as my fan base was familiar with it and had a connection to it.
My friend Caryn suggested My Silent Bravery and I really thought that embodied what the music was about. Additionally, I have been dealing with a sports injury over the years and it is a challenge in my life and I continue to work hard to overcome that obstacle. I now try and inspire others to overcome their obstacles through the message in my music!
Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?
I write the songs and over the last few years have been co-writing a lot with various friends in the industry. The main themes that hit the core of my message are inner strength, perseverance, persistence and ability to overcome obstacles. I also write about relationships and the state of the world and topics that interest me as they come up. These topics do change over time as I change and the world around me changes. There is usually a silver lining to most of my songs.
What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?
I would say the new John Mayer and Chris Stapleton albums have been in heavy rotation, but there are so many artists that inspire to me keep making music. Right now, a lot of friend’s bands inspire me like the Goo Goo Dolls, Tony Lucca, Keaton Simons, Eli Lev, Matt Hartke, Brian Jarvis and more. To see these artists continue to persevere through these trying times inspires me to keep going!
Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?
Bob Marley is probably my favorite artist of all time. He’s one of my biggest inspirations because he was able to unite so many people through music. He put third world countries on the map and brought all of these people together. You know, the “One Love Peace” concerts in Jamaica. I love seeing things like that. I love when music unites people. That and the emotional response that people experience when listening to music is that it makes you feel a range of emotions that help you live your life to the fullest.
What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …
I generally like a little peace and quiet before going on stage. When you are touring there is a lot of travel and commotion prior to performing. I like to decompress and try and find a quiet place to gather myself and some additional energy to try and give the best performance I can.
What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?
The biggest highlight has been meeting and inspiring all of the fans. There have been some nice personal achievements, but I really make music to inspire others so if I am doing that then that is the goal!
If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
Where do I start?! Bob Marley, Dave Matthews, John Mayer, Chris Stapleton, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Rage Against the Machine, Eminem, Damian Marley, Red Hot Chili Peppers, 311, Bob Dylan, etc. These are a small sample of the artists that inspire me and it would be an honor to share the stage with them and get to hang and chat music and life.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
I would like to thank everyone who took the time to read this and listen to the music. I appreciate it! I hope our paths will cross at some point when I hit the road again!
