Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.
Control freak solo artist here, I'm on duty for all the bass, guitars and vocal parts. Drum programming also by myself but I got the fantastic Daisy Palmer in to play on the recordings and of course she made my drums loops and ideas 100 times better with her style and expertise.
For starters, what bands were you part of prior to this project? How long has this project been around?
I performed under my first two names (Dana Jade) before starting this project. The current political climate made it impossible for me to continue under that moniker. It was time to own and value my otherness and join in with those who were being vilified, in hopes of stemming the tide of rising intolerance and hate. Mohammed is my real last name but "Ms. Mohammed" was born (again) in 2017.
What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?
Nina Simone famously said that an artist's duty is to reflect the times. I couldn't agree more and my music has become more personal and more political at the same time. I write about my experience as a brown, queer, immigrant, woman, living in post brexit England, in the era of Trump. These identities intersect and influence how I move through the world and those themes make it into my work.
What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?
At this time of year as a Trinidadian I almost exclusively listen to Soca for the entire Carnival season. But besides King Machel Montano, right now I'm listening to Beth Ditto, Lady Leshurr and Stefflon Don.
Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?
One of my earliest memories would have to be watching Hole on MTV VMAs and being transfixed. I didn't know what had just happened but I needed an electric guitar and distortion pedal asap.
What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, etc …
It's pretty boring actually, I do vocal warm ups and avoid talking before I go on. Save it all for the stage. I take a vodka tonic with me.
What has been the biggest highlight of you music career so far?
Hearing my first Ms. Mohammed single 'Alibi' on BBC Asian Network was pretty mind blowing! Especially accompanied by ridiculously kind words from veteran DJ Bobby Friction. Very grateful for that moment!
If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
Gosh so many! But PJ Harvey, Grace Jones & M.I.A would be at the top of the wish list for sure.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Yes. Start the revolution already.
