Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.
Well my name is Andy Othling, and I do everything! I write, perform, record and mix everything aside from a few instruments the I can’t play.
For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to Lowercase Noises? How long has the band been around?
In high school I was in a blues/rock jam band that was a lot of fun. Obviously I’ve changed a lot stylistically, but I cut my teeth playing a lot of Stevie Ray Vaughan and Van Halen songs and that’s where that came from. I’m also currently in an indie rock band called Archabald which is fun because I’m able to get out a different side of my playing.
What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?
Honestly, when I was thinking about taking myself more seriously in college I was pondering a few different names, and that particular one stuck out as the one that I disliked the least. I don’t remember exactly the reasoning behind the name (this was back in 2008 or so), but I felt like it represented the music in a decently good way. Haven’t changed the name, as much as I’d like to!
Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?
Everything is me, and overall each piece of music is either trying to recreate something I’m feeling, or trying to provide a response to something that I’m feeling. The fun thing about instrumental music though is that people can take anything they want from the music, and I’m extremely happy when people make it their own and give it their own meaning.
What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?
I’m pretty obsessed with a band called A Winged Victory for the Sullen. They’re extremely minimal but extremely powerful, which is something I really aspire to.
Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?
There’s a duo out of Nashville called Hammock that really inspired me in the beginning. They’re amazing and really showed me what you can do as a smaller act.
What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …
Haha not really, for me it’s mostly just about relaxing. This kind of music doesn’t really work well if I’m stressed out or overly busy.
What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?
That’s hard, because everything has been such a slow burn and I’m completely happy with that. The biggest thing for me was when I was able to quit my job in late 2012 to pursue this full time. Every day I’m thankful that I get to do this for a living.
If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
I’d love to support some bigger ambient or neo-classical artists like Hammock, A Winged Victory for the Sullen or Olafur Arnalds. Sigur Ros would be a dream as well.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Don’t think so, thanks for having me on!
