A beautiful blue-eyed California baby of the late 80’s, Kailee Spark started taking piano lessons at 8 years old and became forever intrigued with the idea of expressing herself through songwriting.
Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.
I am a singer/songwriter so it's just me, Kailee Spark. There are a few songs I have that were co-written with my producer, Bub Pratt of Kukuau Studio. I play the guitar and piano, write songs, and sing. :)
For starters, what bands were you a part of prior to this?
Just me! I’ve been writing songs since I was around 12 or so. I was in a couple of bands in high school that didn’t last very long. I’ve always written music, but it wasn’t until somewhat recently that I began to share my songs with a wider audience.
What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?
I write my songs. My songs are all different topics but I’d say a main underlying theme is the notion of trusting in your own intuition, and that the Universe/God/whatever you wanna call it, has got your back. Nature is another theme- I live in Hawaii and my beautiful surroundings definitely inspire aspects of my songs. I also get a lot of ideas from my dreams.
What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?
I’ve been listening to mostly instrumental music lately, like Beats Antique, STS9, Emancipator, and Album Leaf. Also the soundtrack from the 1986 movie Labyrinth. So good. I go through random phases of what I like to listen to, sometimes I go weeks with only listening to Punjabi rap or Bollywood music.
Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?
Well when I was young I loved Weird Al Yankovich, Billy Joel, and weird songs like The Mississippi Squirrel Revival. So, that kind of got me into music initially. When I was a bit older I got into singer/songwriters like Jewel and Michelle Branch, who also inspired me on my musical journey.
What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …
Before a show, I do vocal warmups while I do my makeup and a little meditation. Sometimes I’ll drink a small amount of wine to help settle the nerves ;)
What has been the biggest highlight of your career so far?
The highlight so far was the gratification of the release day of my debut album, Savor This. I had a small show/celebration which I also live streamed on youtube. It was so satisfying to celebrate this milestone and to receive the great response I did from my fans.
If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
I’m gonna say Blink182, because in my imagination they’d be super fun to tour with. I went to a lot of their concerts when I was younger, and once I stood in line for like 5 hours to get their autographs. I was so flattered when Mark said he liked my shirt haha.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
No. but my cat does: Meow, meow meow. Meow! (translation:
you should check out Kailee’s music, it’s pretty cool).
