Unsigned Spotlight: John Woodson's Leg

Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.

Blake Morrell - bass
Greg Garcia - Bass
Dustin Cates - drums
HT Brown - guitar
James Barlow - guitar
Ricky Vannatta - vocals

For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to JWL? How long has the band been around?

Blake Morrell (Severall)
Dustin Cates (Fist, Spy vs Spy, Company Kane/Tsavo, Brotherhood of The Sons of The Originals)
HT Brown (Fist, Dry Spell, Severall)
James Barlow (Ohmz, Nursing Home Panty Raid, Seraphim)
Greg Garcia (Odds Against)
Ricky Vannatta (Vas Odium, Antipas, Sanctus Infernum, AxX of Hate)
JWL has been around since 2009

What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?

John Woodson's Leg (JWL) was originally made fun of on the radio by some djs and made the list of worst band names.

Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?

Dustin & HT write the core of the music and Ricky writes the lyrics. Most of the topics are based around personal struggle. The battle in life and in the mind. I think the topics constantly change as perceptions changes and consciousness evolves. Inspiration is everywhere. Good and bad.

What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?

Gojira, Acid Bath, Pantera, Grave, Death, Metallica, Machinehead, Fear of God, Coroner, Solitude Aeturnus, ect.

Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?

Van Halen was definitely an influence and inspiration back in the day. Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin

What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …

Run through the set. Stretch, drink a beer, A little green and boom!!!

What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?

To be honest. There aren't any major highlights to take account of. Only the true remain. The only highlights are the occasional compliment,
review, interview or radio attention.

If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?

We enjoy playing with every band for the most part. We would be humbled by any tour offer.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Thank you Kill The Music for the opportunity and what you do!!!

We can take it even further. Narrow thinking is your life style. Awaits new design. Technology has no senses. Will be left behind Outside reveals the inner. I'm suffering from disguise. Sit inside and wait for nothing to come to my surprise. Cut your life line. Leave no trace. Take the sunshine. Don't let your thoughts escape. Take your first breath. It's your last chance. In the meantime. Don't just dream but create. Lurks inside you. All you once knew. Can't remember. Who controls who. Show control. Show restraint. No control. As I said it. It lived. So polluted. Yes I am. Shame us. The working bell still chimes. Enslave us. Set us free with lies. This could be you. This could be us. Invalid. Devoid. Limitless. Destroyed. Prepare your self. Designed to fail. Invalid... This could be you. This could be us. Look at you now. Limitless. You're a god. You're a fool. You're a god. We came to die. We came to die. Invalid. Limitless. We came to die. You. Us. Self. Fail.
