Unsigned Spotlight: Jaenki

Jaenki is a mystical and other worldly weird pop band hailing from Kansas City, Missouri.

Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.

Stephanie Perkins: vox/guitar/keys
Kenn Jankowski: vox/guitar/keys
Ryan Wallace: vox/guitar/keys

For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to Jaenki? How long has the band been around?

We live, work, and party together like champs. No prior bands. Our very first time playing in front of an audience was also the only show we’ve ever played. It was about one month ago to a sold out crowd of 1400+ people. I imagine all shows to come will be an equal to better experience.

What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?

Jaenki is Janky, but spelled Jaenki. It gives us a scape goat if we accidentally screw something up.

Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?

All of us, in our own ways. The main themes thus far have been mystical and otherworldly. Topics will definitely change. Our next one is gonna be heavy.

What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?

Well, Cor Cor, we like LCD sound system. We’d like to point out other bands. We’d like to mention mass gothic and Eliot Sumner. We also like Suuns.

Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?

No

What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect.

Hugs. Hugs take away the nerves. We always leave the green room door open too, so other bands will be sure and see us repeatedly hugging. It makes them feel awkward.... which is empowering. Love. Hugs.

What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?

I feel like it’s prolly when we mixed a song on a mixing console that was used for some Michael Jackson hit. But I don’t remember which song. So idk.

If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?

God dammit, New Order because they’re New Order. Also The Cure, because they rock. Also Yeah Yeah Yeahs because YEEEAAAHHH.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Why is taco Monday’s not a thing? Why does the taco day have to start with a “T?” Why can’t we have taco fridays? Or taco even numbered days? Soft taco Saturday’s? What’s wrong with the system? They’re delicious, businesses know that, so they control the market. 😑
