Hamish Anderson is a student of the three Kings (Albert, BB and Freddie) and Keith Richards with touches of Bob Dylan and Tom Petty.
Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.
It’s just me, Hamish Anderson. I play with a trio configuration now, but I have done other variations in the past - solo, duo, trio and four piece
For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to Hamish Anderson? How long has the band been around?
Happy to share that I’ve been releasing music under my name since 2013.
Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?
I write my songs. The main themes are mostly personal things that i’m going through or things that people that are close to me are going through in their lives. I write a lot about friendships, relationships, being far away from home and on the road a lot. It’s always changing, some of the songs i’ve written recently are a bit more about what is going on with the world in a wider sense and what I see and feel living in the age we live in, good and bad. If I feel really strongly about something, I write about it.
What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?
Recently i’ve been listening to a lot of Fleetwood Mac (Peter Green through the Buckingham/Nicks era), ELO, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Big Star, Elvis, Bo Diddley, Lucinda Williams, T - Rex etc. Newer releases that I’ve been listening to are the new Jonathan Wilson album, Ray Lamontagne, Dawes, Alabama Shakes.
Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to play music?
The first concert I ever saw was The Who playing in my hometown of Melbourne, Australia. I was 12 years old and had just really started getting into the guitar and music so it was definitely a life changing concert for me and really confirmed to me that I wanted to pursue being a musician.
What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, etc …
Mostly a lot of pacing. I always feel really nervous before a gig so I just kind of pace around and try to not think about it too much. I’ve just learned to live with it and once I get on stage and if the show is going well then it all the nerves just seem to disappear.
What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?
I got to open for B.B. King in the US in 2014 and his music has always been a huge influence on me so that was a definite highlight! Also getting to play some great festivals like Mountain Jam, Telluride Blues Festival, BottleRock, Ottawa BluesFest.
If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, The Who, Eric Clapton, Alabama Shakes, Neil Young (the list could go on forever)
Is there anything else you would like to add?
My new single “No Good’ is out now! If you dig blues and rock & roll check it out! https://ffm.to/nogood
