Future Misters is a four-piece indie rock band from Grand Rapids, MI.
Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.
Trevor Sharnas - Guitar, Vocals
Ryan Fluke - Drums
Nicholas Buwalda - Bass,
Lewis Malone - Lead Guitar, Vocals
For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to Future Misters? How long has the band been around?
This is the first actual band that Fluke and I (Trevor) have been in, Nick used to play bass for a band called Antighost. Lewis also has a band called The Tube Socks that Fluke actually plays bass in as well as Lewis’ brother Keegan who drums.
What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?
We all wanted to be substitute teachers like Ned Shneebly! No, it was actually on a list of names that we had put together and thought it sounded fitting. You always call grown-ups Mr. or Mrs. so and so, we figured it’s our way of saying we're putting that off.
Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?
Trevor and Lewis write the songs together, but ideas always are thrown out collectively at practice. A lot of it revolves around those same old themes; love, drugs, being in a band, pretty much whatever we see around us.
What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?
A lot of our inspiration musically is across the board. Some indie or alternative would be Arctic Monkeys or Cage the Elephant, The White Stripes too. Also hip hop/rap; Denzel Curry, Anderson Paak, Madlib to name a few.
Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?
For me (Trevor), I’m a Stooges and Arctic Monkeys fan and Lewis gets a lot of his inspiration from John Frusciante of Red Hot Chili Peppers. I know Nick was a Blink-182 fan and Fluke has no particular band/artist, but drummed to a lot of hip hop and metal growing up.
What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …
A lot of coffee, a little bit of weed, and some booze does the trick every time. If it’s a nice day, we’ll definitely throw a grill-out into the equation.
What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?
Going on tour with Antighost back in August of 2019 was a pretty good time! It was our first time on the road so everything was a first. But going to play in different towns every night is a great feeling and everyone should do it!
If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
I think Led Zeppelin in the seventies is the only proper answer. Who else would you ever want to tour with? They were huge.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Thank you for the interview :)
