Faith Powell - drums
Garrett Parkinson - synths/keyboards
For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to Faun Flora?
Before Faun Flora, I (Jasmine) was just doing solo acoustic gigs underneath my old songwriter name as Jasmine Alexis. I met Jose when I joined the band that he was in at the time, called As For Me. Faun Flora was started back in the fall of 2017 around the same time as As For Me, and since then Jose has been along for the ride. We have just met Garrett and Faith in the past year, and have been working collectively practicing to play as many live shows as they come.
What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?
One night, I was laying in bed playing around with a list of names. I was tired of people knowing me as Jasmine Alexis, especially if I was experimenting with a different genre than the singer-songwriter route. Faun Flora derives from the scientific terms “fauna” which means animals, and “flora” which means plants. I have always had a love for nature growing up, and it is one of the roots of inspiration for my music and so I wanted to pay homage to that with the name. I didn’t think I was going to stick with it, but people seem to like it.
Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?
I (Jasmine) write all of the lyrics and the majority of the tracks. The only time that it changes is when we’re in the studio recording the final version of the song, or if one of the other band members decides to put their own twist to their part when playing live. I tend to gravitate towards writing about nuances and experiences with relationships in my own worldview. I’m always looking to experiment and try new things with my music, so I know that it will most likely change over time.
What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?
Lately I’ve been listening to a lot of Men I Trust, MorMor, Cannons, and Japanese Breakfast. Men I Trust actually inspired me to start learning the bass, so I’ve been teaching myself by learning their bass tabs.
Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?
I would say that the core inspirations for Faun Flora have always and will always be Foster the People, Lights, and Coldplay. They were all bands and people I idolized as musicians and performers growing up from childhood through my teens. Studying their music and seeing them live in concert have been some of the best experiences I’ve had in my life so far.
What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …
I do a lot of self-care before the show because it’s so easy for me to tighten up when I’m nervous. It’s important that I have the whole day off, and I’ll either spend it relaxing or hanging out with the band after practicing one run through of our set for the show.
What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?
I never even really thought that I’d ever get as far being on the radio in a different state. Everything that is happening now is so brand new and surprising to me. I wasn’t ever expecting to play a venue any bigger than a coffee shop, let alone seeing “Drive” get as many plays as it did, or getting signed to a label. At this point, I’ve just decided to put the pedal to the metal and see how far I can push myself and the band.
If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
Definitely Foster the People. Their live production and performance has always kept me on my toes and given me some of the best memories of my teenage years. They’re the reason why I strive to be better at performing each time I play live. Coldplay would be amazing to tour with as well, just because of how massive their production is and to see all of the large venues that they play.
