Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.
Sean- Lead vocals and rhythm guitar
Josh- Lead guitar and backup vocals
Deven- Drums and backup vocals
For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to Divided Minds? How long has the band been around?
Josh was in a band called Chasing Shadows when he was 13 that lasted a couple of months. This is Deven’s first band. Sean was in a band called Jimmy Leg when he was 12 and another band called lane change shortly after that. Divided Minds is in its fourth year.
What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?
Originally, our band name was Breakthrough, but we googled that and found out it’s already a band. Divided Minds came from our fourteen year old minds when we started the band. A past member thought of it and we all thought it sounded cool.
Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?
The songwriting process starts Josh. Josh will write a riff and a chorus then bring it to the rest of us and we’ll add the verses, drums, and bridges. Most of our songs deal with the theme of heartbreak and coping with it. We think these themes are important but we are definitely branching out and experimenting with different themes.
What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?
We’ve always been big fans of A Day To Remember and All Time Low. But currently we find inspiration in bands like 5 Seconds of Summer and The Wrecks.
Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?
The three of us each have our own band that made us want to play music. For Deven it was Green Day and All Time Low. For Sean it was bands like the Foo Fighters and The Red Hot Chili Peppers. And for Josh it was Silverstein. Collectively, the most inspiring band for us is by far A Day To Remember.
What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …
Sean is always sure to lead us in a vocal warm up about 30 minutes prior to each set. We always do some leg and arm stretches and drink a bunch of water. The weirdest thing we do is if one of us is tired, we’ll slap them to wake them up and get the adrenaline going.
What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?
By far it has been playing at Tempe Marketplace with BØRNS. That show has been the biggest show we’ve played so far with about 2,000 people there and it was definitely the most fun being able to talk to and hang out with so many cool people.
If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
Our dream tour would probably be with A Day To Remember, The Wrecks, and 5 Seconds of Summer. We love all three of those bands and would love to hang out with them and play at their shows. They’ve all been a huge inspiration for us.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
