Unsigned Spotlight: Circuitry

Circuitry are a progressive metalcore band from Long Branch, NJ.

Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.

Christian Colabelli: Guitar, Vocals,

Joel Monet: Vocals, Bass, Production

Matt Guglielmo: Drums/Production

For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to Circuitry? How long has the band been around?

Matt and Christian were part of Dark Empire, a progressive extreme metal band, which imploded in 2013. Joel and Christian played/play together in an alternative rock band called Reach. When Dark Empire disbanded the three came together with the hope of crafting an extremely groovy, heavy record. Circuitry has been around since July 2013. It took us a year to craft the album, which was released on November 4, 2014.

What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?

The name is basically the only thing we all thought didn’t completely suck. We feel that it fit what we were trying to do musically. We have never changed the band name.

Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?

On the debut album, Matt and Christian wrote all the instrumental music and Joel handled the vocal melodies and lyrical content. Our themes deal with aggression, love, hypocrisy, science vs. religion, loss, pain and release. I think we try to write what we feel as clichéd as that sounds. Topics we cover will surely change based on whatever is happening and moves us at the time.

What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?

This is a seemingly impossible question to answer because we draw from such a breadth of influences. We listen to and love Sikth, Devin Townsend, Circa Survive, Gojira, Thom Yorke/Radiohead, Animals as Leaders, Alex Machacek, Allan Holdsworth, Killswitch Engage, The Dillinger Escape Plan, The Mars Volta, A Perfect Circle, Chris Thile, Paramore, Joe Henderson, The 1975, Sia, City Sleeps, Incubus and the list goes on and on and on.

Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?

Joel’s dad and grandfather were musicians so he grew up with the bug already in his veins. Christian was greatly influenced by the grunge movement, which inspired him to pick up the guitar, and Matt was particularly taken with Slipknot.

What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …

Joel does a lot of handstands… Matt eats Taylor Ham Egg and Cheese sandwiches, and Christian does headbangers and close grip pullups.  We also drink absinthe if we can procure it.

What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?

Getting a feature in Substream Music Magazine was pretty unbelievable, as was recently being picked by Don Jamieson from VH1’s, “That Metal Show” to headline an upcoming concert date.

If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?

Dillinger Escape Plan because they are from NJ, understand our plight, and we’d get good workouts in with Greg. Killswitch Engage, because we would have ongoing contests with Adam D. to see who could cop the most ridiculous stage attire. Protest the Hero, because we would fit well with them and Roddy seems hysterical. Slipknot, because it’s Slipknot.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

We’d like to thank Kill  The Music for this interview and anyone who checks out our music and supports us. We will see you in your town soon!
