For starters, how long has the band been around?
Band has been around with a few alterations since 2014.
Have any members been a part group/band prior to Charlie Sub & Sound Dogs or currently a member of other groups too?
Our bandmates have a variety of professional jobs including real estate, law school studies, music instructor etc. Interestingly enough; lead singer/founder Charlie Sub is the only one without academic/professional training; he is self-taught.
What’s the origin of the band name?
It seemed like most of us had dogs and it seemed like a catchy name.
Who writes your songs, one member, all members, etc?
Lead singer Charlie Sub composes all original material and we mix in a few covers per gig.
What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?
Our band has a great back story, Charlie’s Dad, Paul Sub, owned Queens Coventry Nightclub in the 1970s. This ground-breaking nightspot introduced New York to glam and punk rock. Kiss played their 1st performance there as well as many early shows with the Ramones, New York Dolls, Blondie, the Dictators and many other revolutionary bands. Charlie’s first job was with his Dad here and had a profound influence on his musical identity. Charlie has written all the material except for the covers. They deal with his early years in New York. Life, love, heart-ache, fatherhood, rock and roll and the nitty-gritty of 70s NYC are all powerfully expressed.
What artists/bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?
Beatles, The Doors, Cream, the Ramones, Cat Stevens and many others.
Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?
Rolling Stones and/or the Kinks.
What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect…
What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?
Probably performing at the place we feel most comfortable Ethyls in NYC!
If you could tour with any artists or bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
Hmmm..ChainSmokers, Imagine Dragons, Springsteen..past Doors and James Brown.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Every performer lives to be on stage and share their craft. It is hard work born out a labor of love and showmanship. As they saying goes - How do you get to Carnegie Hall? Practice, practice, practice. We are fortunate enough that Charlie opened the Upper East Side 1970s inspired nightclub Ethyls with go-go girls, nightly DJs, 70s inspired cuisine and videos. We practice there weekly as well as are usually there after our shows and on weekends! A very nice perk!
