Awaiting Eli is known for their outstanding skillset, combining crushing guitars with an explosive low end, along with a dynamic range of melodic vocals. This electrifying four-piece arena rock group is one of the most exciting new bands, having come a long way from Omaha, Nebraska’s vibrant music scene.
Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band. What bands were you guys a part of prior to Awaiting Eli? How long has the band been around?
Eric Tomes - singer songwriter (Apollo under fire) Bobby Braz - guitar Carlos Garcia - bass (formerly Shadowsin bassist) Justin Essink - Drums (formerly Words Like Daggers) the band has been established a little over 6 years now.
What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?
Origin of the name means reaching new heights always striving to be a better you and create the best art possible.
Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?
I (Eric) write most of the songs. They’re all true stories. From the best to the most f’d up stuff I’ve been through. As life changes I’m sure the subjects and styles in which I write will change too
What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?
Major influences are Alice In Chains, Filter, Stone Temple Pilot’s, Limp Bizkit .
Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?
I would say a number of shows but I member seeing Alice In Chains shortly after Layne’s death and shortly after they announced will as the singer. I went to see that tour and that was about as emotional as it gets for a rock show. It was amazing.
Then you have shows like Chad the Nickleback dudes put on and it’s just a big party that’s rocking and full of charisma.
Then you have Sevendust. One of the greatest live bands I think. Full of energy emotion and just everything you need to feel the show. Every time I have seen them the energy is insane and professionalism is spot on. That’s what I strive for.
What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, etc?
I go through my normal ritual. Throat coat, warm ups, alone time to get in my head space. Sometimes some fun music and messing around w the guys. All depends on moods and the mood of the night
What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?
We have had lots of great moments sharing the stage w/ other national acts. I think one of the most fun nights was w Wayne from Saliva though.
If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
Still waiting to get the opportunity to blow people’s minds opening up for Alice In Chains or filter. We would fit very well. Again I’m sure if we had the 25-40k to buy on wed be there. Lol.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Be ready. We’re coming. This new music kicks ass and is the best record we’ve put out yet. And I got a lot more on the back burner waiting.
