House shows. They never fail to make you get riled up to get down to hang with your friends and listen to some music. I had the chance to attend one of the greatest house shows ever: A Kurt Travis house show. Many know Kurt Travis for his solo work as well as being an ex-singer Dance Gavin Dance and current A Lot Like Birds singer. Let's take an inside look at what happens at a Kurt Travis house show.
It started out exactly how you would expect. I walked through the front door of the address i was given for the house show. Immediately, 3 things caught my eye.
1. All bands that were playing that night were just hanging out in the back.
2. This was literally someone's house. Neighbors would walk by and people kepy walking in and outside freely.
3. Kurt Travis casually was drinking and talking to everyone in the crowd.
Note: And Kurt told us an exclusive detail about his upcoming side projects here.
After about an hour, sounds of warming up drums and guitars started and everyone rushed to the basement to see Pittsburgh band, DIVORCE. They played an energetic 25 minute set in what was actually someone's basement. After them people casually walked back out, considering how hot it was.
Next to play was another Pittsburgh local band, Save Us From The Archon. If you haven't listened to SUFTA, I highly recommend you listen to them immediately. They are cateragorized as a instrumental mathcore band and they delivered a hard-hitting 30 minute set (This band is personally my 4th favorite of all time).
The normal "go back outside" tactic with the crowd happened again and Adventurer began to set up thier equipment. Now, if you have never heard of Adventurer I urge you to go and listen now. Personally, Adventurer killed thier set and even made Kurt Travis run up to sing some lyrics along with them.
And then it was time for Kurt Travis to play. With backing instrumentals by Adventurer, Kurt played a good 10 songs with them followed by a couple of covers of Simon and Garfunkel and more sad acoustic songs. It was amazing to see Kurt play both with Adventurer and without, because he has an 110% stage presence at all times.
Although Pittsburgh was one of the last dates on the tour I urge you to go see Kurt when A Lot Like Birds tour again. I'm giving this show a 9.9 out of 10 stars, seeing as the show was very intimate and seemed as if Kurt Travis was just my good friends, playing us a couple of his songs. (The .1 off is accredited to him not playing a cover of "Uneasy Hearts Weighs The Most")
