Finally, after much hassle getting my Covid test and ticket, I entered the venue.
Break Stuff by Limp Bizkit played over the PA and helped get the crowd moving right before opener Wage War took the stage. Wage War is good at making heavy riffs and breakdowns but the whiny singing ruins it for me.
In This Moment’s stage production is awesome but also pretentious at the same time. Direct support shouldn’t have costume changes. Especially when you’re standing in one place for your set time. Maria’s vocals were too grating for me after a while.
Now, on to the main event of the evening! Slipknot’s kabuki (aka stage curtain) hung ominously as the diligent stage crew hidden behind cleared the way for the headliner. For Those About to Rock (We Salute You) by AC/DC and Get Behind Me Satan and Push by Billie Jo Spears was the choice of pre-show music for Slipknot. Naturally, the crowd obliged and sang along.
Lights out. The opening riff to Disasterpiece fills the room. A faint glow Light is emitting through the curtain shortly before it drops and the show kicks into overdrive! After powering through the first few songs (which included the fan-favorite “Sulfur”), Slipknot played their newest song, “The Chapeltown Rag.” Corey’s vocals sounded amazing compared to the Knotfest livestream back in November. Speaking of, guitars were awesome as always but it sounded like they were clipping for the whole show. A bit headache inducing. The beer keg hits were inconsistent as well, some being louder than others. Aside from a few first world problems, this concert shows us why Slipknot are still at the top of their game.
