Senses Fail have been going strong for 13 years now, and it doesn't look like they'll be stopping anytime soon. With the release of Pull The Thorns From Your Heart, Senses Fail are showing off their hardcore roots. Let's take a look at this album and see what it brings to Senses Fail's discography.
The first thing I noticed in the release of the album's lead single, "The Importance Of The Moment Of Death" is that they are trying something different for a change. The change in pace being bringing out their hardcore roots with pounding guitars and mind-wrenching vocals. It really shows off how they've expanded the genre to a whole new level of post-hardcore.
Moving on to the beginning of the album, the first track is one of the few albums that speak for the rest of the album. Most of the time, an album can change the genre every song and make it a masterpiece. In this album, although the genre doesn't change, it fits very well. The first song, "The Three Marks Of Existence" starts hardcore and ends there as well.
As I listened further into the album it turns out there is a change of pace. That is until you listen to the album's slow song, "My Fear Of An Unlived Life". This song doesn't fit with the album at all. It's very soft and even the vocals are quite tame compared to the rest. I'm not saying it's a bad song necessarily, but it could have been done better for sure.
This album speaks for itself in quality. Most songs are very hardcore and they've strayed from the path a bit in terms of genre. It's great to see a band step outside of their comfort zone for their last two albums and do a good job. I'm giving this album a solid 8 out of 10 stars. There are some minor problems I have with the consistency of the songs, but overall it had a good flow. I've linked the album stream below and I highly recommend you check out their new album and you catch them all summer on Vans Warped Tour.
