Andrew McMahon's new album, Andrew McMahon In the Wilderness, was released on October 14th. Before listening to this album, I have never heard of/listened to Andrew McMahon. "High Dive," and "Maps For the Getaway" were my favorites after listening all the way through. At first, I wasn't really into the album, but after listening to it a second and third time, I began to appreciate his lyrics and the catchiness of each song.
I think the album has hints of pop music, without being pop. His voice definitely isn't my favorite, and in "Black and White Movies" it's something I could do without, but there's something about it that makes it stick in my mind. The piano playing had to be my favorite part of each song. The piano is my favorite instrument, so it was cool to hear so much of it on this album. Being a first time listener, I'm not familiar with any of his previous work, so I'm gathering information from iTunes reviews, and as far as I can see, fans of his won't be disappointed with the album and its sound.
Overall, I'd give the album a 7/10. It was good, but it wasn't something that completely blew me away. Definitely at least worth a listen.
