When Shinedown released their latest album “Attention Attention” in 2018, it took fans on a journey through the human psyche with an emphasis on mental health and recovery. At the time, the stories and themes explored on the record felt very vivid and now they have come to life even further through the release of an official “Attention Attention” film.
The movie takes past and new music videos for the 14 album tracks and threads them together with voice over work from frontman Brent Smith. The film finds the band performing as a diverse cast of characters try to find a way forward as they battle struggles from within.
Through their pain, the characters learn that “wanting things to change is not the same as making things change” and that “you can’t go back. You can’t rewind. It just is.” This is essentially how life works. People can’t change the past, but they can change their mindsets and work towards a better future. Tragedy leads to rebirth and this idea is ever present as the characters go through various forms of mental gymnastics before finally finding their selves.
As a whole, the film is a cinematic work of art that gives the audience a new way to experience the “Attention Attention” album and its powerful take on the human spirit. If there is one message people should take from the movie, it’s this:
“Never be afraid to fail. For in your moments of victory, you will find your purpose, and your purpose will become your legacy.”
