Kelsey Luo Premieres Djent Cover of Joji's "Slow Dancing In the Dark"

Canadian rock musician, Kelsey Luo, is making a statement in the underground heavy music scene with her passionate and emotive songwriting, djent-inspired instrumentals and somber voice.

Influenced by rock and metalcore bands since the age of 9, her passion for this music is undeniable, and her genuine lyrics relate directly to her personal life. “My goal is to tell my life story through my music, and in the process, be able to help people heal and overcome their struggles along the way.” Armed with a story to tell, her lyrics depict the challenges faced from her past, the current journey towards a career in an unpredictable field, and her confidence and persistence for the future.

Not one to follow the rules, Kelsey is currently working on unclean vocals for new material that will branch out to a heavier, more aggressive and technical sound, that is truly her own.

I first heard “Slow Dancing in the Dark” through a No Dice cover before the original, and instantly fell in love with it. I listened back to the original from Joji, and knew I had to cover this song. It related to what I was going through at the time, wanting to slow dance, (or be with), someone that wasn’t there anymore.

My friend Cesar Marenco and I collaborated on this cover, and we put a lot of focus on the instrumentals and production. I wrote the guitar riff in the chorus, (which was played by my friend Jimmy Yu), and we incorporated little rhythmic patterns and ambient textures throughout the song.

The video was filmed by Jordan Wong, and I edited my first video for this cover. It taught me that background and foreground are just as important for a video, and that visuals really can make or break a cover.

My greatest wish is if Joji himself happened to see this video, and to make both him and Filthy Frank proud :)
