“Why am I so sad?!” is definitely the kind of song where I wanted to prioritise camp and fun more than anything else! The tone of the song is essentially making a mockery of the part of your brain that's sad for seemingly no reason. It's frustrating to feel down when you don't think you should be, but it also seems to just be a part of life unfortunately. Because of that I wanted “Why am I so sad?!” to be almost funny! Instead of crying at the issue we laugh at its ridiculousness.
Keeping with that theme, I knew I wanted to use clowns or clown-like imagery in the video and I wanted it to be a bit of a party scene. The idea was “feeling like a fool” mixed with “pity party.” Things like blowing up a balloon only for it to blow all the air back into your face or fly out of your hands. Party poppers that are disappointing and signs falling off the walls. I wanted the humor that comes from the pitiful, in a way. Making myself the butt of the joke is a personal joy, and I think that life is so much more fun when you don't take yourself too seriously, and I think that that really enhanced the “vibes” or the video.
If you watch the video, you’ll probably find Ducky in most of the shots!! That was completely unplanned!!! When we got to the studio the team showed me this huge rubber ducky and I immediately fell in love with it and fixated on it. It ended up working out so well because the constant of the ducky is so cute and so sweet, and I actually kidnapped him and now he hangs out on my piano. Best part of the video, hands down.I’m super happy with how the video came out, I feel like it captured the vibes I wanted perfectly. I was super fortunate to work with an amazing team!
