Singularity will be released in North America on November 5th. Produced and mixed by Will Putney (Lamb Of God, Suicide Silence, Fit For An Autopsy), Singularity has already won mass acclaim for its blend of post-hardcore and modern metal upon its Australian release earlier this year.

Australia, a country that have, in recent years, spewed forth some of the biggest hitters in modern Metal. Whether it be big acts such as Parkway Drive, heavy and destructive acts such as Thy Art Is Murder and Make Them Suffer or something devastating such as Destroyer 666, it is apparent that Metal is something that seems celebrated over there. So where does Metalcore Aussie act Northlane stand amongst such tantalizing bands? Apparently rather damn high up the ladder.

'Singularity' is the second album from a band that are easily becoming the next hot property in the Metalcore scene. Whereas Capture the Crown seemingly tried to recreate Asking Alexandria's first album, Northlane decided to take their own path. Mixing heavy chugs, well-balanced keyboard work with precise drumming and some of the most ground-breaking vocal work within the current scene, Northlane prove to us all that they are more than just another Metalcore band.

Starting off their Metalcore attack is the intro opener ‘Genesis’. People could draw similarites to Asking Alexandria intros but this is by far heavier and better than any Asking Alexandria intro to date. ‘Genesis’ moves into ‘Scarab’, a heavy yet wonderful track. Making good use of vocal versatility, heavy chugs, well placed synthesizers and well-executed drumming, it is something that sets the landmark of the albums genuine feel. It has everything you expect from modern Metalcore but with a little twist added into it in order to produce that extra kick you get when listening to this album.

The album moves through its several tracks, keeping its turbo-charged assault on the senses with songs that constantly change in their tone and approach, with hard-hitters ‘Worldeater’, single ‘Quantum Flux’, ‘Masquerade’, which features Stray From the Path frontman Drew York, and title-track ‘Singularity’ standing out. The last track, entitled ‘Aspire’, is a fitting end to an album that doesn’t give up, not loosing any of its power throughout.

An album that showcases all sorts of vocal power, well-placed techno aspects, heavy chugs and melodic riffs with a fitting bassline and suitable drumming is something to be proud of and it is clear that Northlane are heading towards big things. The album is balanced out perfectly with great sound quality due to the high production quality. It is mixed extremely well and keeps its listener engaged, with all songs having their subtle differences to appear more interesting.

There isn’t much to say about this album because, in the end, you’re either going to love it or hate it. This is one of those albums you have to witness yourself before making up your mind.

So then, well produced, a great balance between heavy riffs, melodic riffs, devastating bass-lines, precise drumming, great synth grooves and versatile vocals and an all round great album. But yet this is something you need to decide for yourself. If you love Metalcore, you’ll love this album but if you’re a little skeptical then just give it a listen. You never know, you may just end up liking what you hear. This is more than a mere standard Metalcore album, it is a little gem within the Metal community.

This is something to behold and appreciate and, in terms of Metalcore albums, is something that is damn bloody excellent. By far the best Metalcore album of this year and this is one of the more surprising releases so far. Well-balanced, this is something that everyone should learn to appreciate. Northlane, you have hit gold with this gem.

9/10

After the departure of longtime drummer, Moe Carlson, Protest The Hero enlisted Lamb of God drummer Chris Adler to fill the position for the recording of their forthcoming album, Volition. Now with extensive touring on the horizon, the band has decided to fill the slot permanently with Mike Ieradi. Here is the statement from the band:

"Finding a new drummer has proven to be a tough task!  We had interest and video submissions from many friends, fans, and family alike (yes, Choadie’s mom sent in a video of her ripping "c’est la vie!").  Every single one of those submissions was wonderful - but we realized it was going to be impossible to select a drummer based on a YouTube video.  We needed someone who we knew.  Someone who we thought we wouldn’t murder and leave at the side of the road two weeks into tour.  We think we have found that person in Mike Ieradi - a Canadian fella we met many moons ago

As widely reported, LAMB OF GOD’s concert in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia scheduled for September 28th has been cancelled by the government, who refused to issue a permit for the show even though the concert had been on sale and had sold over 1,500 tickets.

LAMB OF GOD’s guitarist Mark Morton has issued the following statement regarding the decision by the Malaysian government. Shows scheduled in New Zealand, Australia, and Thailand will still be performed by the group:

“It is very evident (and a bit frustrating) that the groups, parties and powers that have taken the most offense to our music and lyrics, have themselves only made a passing glance at the content and meanings of those songs. We would invite anyone offended by our music to engage in a discussion regarding the true motivations behind our work, especially before publicly slandering us based on assumptions and shallow misinterpretation.

We sincerely apologize to our amazing fans in Malaysia for the cancellation. Many thanks to all who have spoken out in support of us through this.”

During the next few weeks while Lamb of God is gearing up for several dates overseas in August, vocalist Randy Blythe is busy gearing up for the release of his upcoming memoir. The memoir, which puts emphasis on the past year of his life, is an incredible, harrowing, heartbreaking, and redemptive story told in Blythe’s already well-recognized writing style. It seems that almost every major media outlet has attempted to righteously cover the story of Blythe’s arrest, incarceration, trial, and acquittal for manslaughter in the Czech Republic last year, but now, the man at the center of it all unveils the truths of the ordeal, personally detailing every aspect in his own words. No ghost-writers, no co-authors, just Randy Blythe, himself.

“While I’ve dreamed of being a published author almost since I began to read, I never imagined my first book would center around such a sad topic. Sometimes though, life unexpectedly provides you a story that needs to be told,” states Blythe. “I believe this one does (for several different reasons, not just for the benefit of myself), so I will tell it with the respect and dignity all involved deserve. This will be a good read, I promise you, and I hope some good comes of it.”

"I was thrilled to get the call to join up and help out my friends in Protest, how could I turn down one of my favorite bands? I’ve done a bit of session work before with Testament and Ron Jarzombek but nothing this immerse.

I lived and breathed this record for 8 weeks and even lived in Toronto for a month with the guys. The experience was intense to say the least. Some of the most demanding and intricate drum work of my career. I’m very proud to have been a part of the Protest family and can’t wait to have you hear it.” ~ Chris

Drummers; they have the best view in the house and are the essential backbone of a band. Not to mention that drummers have to have the stamina of an Olympic athlete when playing live. As metal, hardcore, and other genres get faster, drummers are tasked with keeping a steady rhythm and flow. Now, the criteria we used may upset some people but it’s the only way to be fair.

1. Each drummer had to have both recorded AND performed live within the past five years.

2. We had to see them live (the only real way to decide to judge this)

 10. Matt Nicholls (Bring Me The Horizon)

image

We’ll be the first to admit that BMTH were a shitty band for their first two albums (Okay, maybe just the first one). Aside from that, the band grew up (literally and musically) on their last two albums, “There Is A Hell…”, and “Sempiternal”. Matt’s drumming may not stand out when compared to the other drummers on this list, but it’s clear that the band is now making music that’s a clear departure from their beginnings.

9. Dan Searle (Architects UK)

image

Architects are a very underrated band; they have a huge following in their hometown of Europe but are just breaking through here in the US. Fans of mathcore will appreciate Dan’s drumming on their first two records. Their latest record, Daybreaker, sees a return to their technical roots on Hollow Crown.

8. Billy Rymer (The Dillinger Escape Plan)

image

Billy may have only joined TDEP four years ago but he’s definitely earned his place on this list. His playing includes plenty of polyrythmns and odd time signatures, which is the core of TDEP’s music which is ironic cause Billy played for a wide variety of bands including 311, Alien Ant Farm, and even Kelly Clarkson.

7. Roy Mayorga (Stone Sour)

image

Roy was the original drummer of Soufly and has played with Sepultura, and very briefly with Ozzy Osbourne. He joined Stone Sour in 2006 and has destroyed the kit since.

6. Ryan “Legs” Leger (Every Time I Die)

image

After losing their previous drummer due to “personal conflicts” Ryan auditioned for Every Time I Die and laid down some of their best drum work yet on their latest record, “Ex Lives

5. Blake Richardson (Between the Buried and Me)

image

Blake used to play in the deathcore band, Glass Casket before joining BTBAM. Noted for his blast beats, odd timing, double bass drumming, and fill-heavy style, Richardson is considered a standout in his field.

4. Branden Morgan (Misery Signals)

image

Probably the most underrated drummer considering Misery Signals have been a huge influence for newer bands. Their debut record, Of Malice and the Magnum Heart is highly regarded as one of the best metalcore releases ever. Critics and bands have praised the band’s ability on the record in effortlessly blending melody and aggression.

3. Matt Halpern (Periphery)

image

When Matt isn’t drumming for Periphery, he’s running BandHappy which allows you to take lessons from your favorite musicians online and on-tour. His playing is more focused on the groove then how fast he can play a blast beat. The kit he plays is just what he needs and nothing more; perfect for playing ghost notes.

2. Matt Greiner (August Burns Red)

image

If want to hear a great drummer who can play fast and also write some jazz parts, Matt is your man. He not only has great complex timing in his hand movements but also uses double bass in an interesting way and really compliments the rest of the music.

1. Chris Adler (Lamb of God)

image

Little known fact: Chris played bass long before he decided to pick up the drumsticks. His playing style is known for his creative fills and precision double bass and for his often used heel-toe technique. You can tell what band you’re listening to just by hearing his drumming.
