The Death Card (tarot card) when received is a card that represents the death of one aspect of life, and the beginning of another. For Sworn In, this is just the beginning, and the bands first full-length is finally here. After several months of waiting, Sworn In is ready to take that next step forward with The Death Card.
There are a handful of words I could use to describe The Death Card; eerie, emotional, dark, powerful, hypnotic, all these terms noticeably have no positive vibe to them. This album tells the story of a man, or a character who is slowly losing his mind, his emotions, physical human characteristics, and is constantly contemplating death in each song (and eventually ending in death on the final two songs). Lyrically this album stays consistent with those thoughts and amazingly tells that story song after song. The title track, “XIII” gives a precursor to the album, which puts the entire record on a constant ever-descending loop. Sworn In might not be the band you want to listen to if your looking for metal love songs. Be ready for some powerful vocals from Tyler Dennen that will make you uncomfortable, awestruck and pissed off all at the same time. I got the same feeling of amazement and discomfort from the first time I listened to Slipknot’s “Iowa”, as I did with The Death Card. Corey Taylor and Tyler Dennen are clearly two different vocalists with entirely different styles, but I think fans of Slipknot would be surprised with what Sworn In has to offer.
Musically the album stays consistent with the playing style, riffs and heaviness. Each song is written with a different structure and different patterns, and seems to have a common theme of mixing up between speeding up & speeding down. The flow of the album fits right along side with the lyrics and really tells a dark story. Old fans can really see how Sworn In has grown since their previous EP’s in all aspects, but above all the music has matured a lot. Some may find the breakdowns and riffs are too similar and that could take away from the uniqueness of their sound. I find the music and riffs to be powerful and creative, but I definitely see room for growth, which isn’t a problem since this is their first full-length album.
Despite Sworn In’s consistent fan base growth over these past few months, I still see their market and audience hard too reach because not everybody is into music this dark and troubling. However I’m sure people could say the same thing about bands like Slipknot, Korn and Emmure when they first started, and everybody can see how far those acts have come. We’ll all have to wait and see how The Death Card takes off.
Sworn In has now made their mark in the world with The Death Card, and I highly recommend it for fans of Slipknot, Emmure and Bring Me The Horizon. Check out their music videos for “Snake Eyes” and “Hypocrisy”

Today’s feature of “5 Albums That Influenced Me” comes from Sworn In. The band will release their debut record, The Death Card which will be out on August 20th.
Tyler Dennen (Vocals)
Thrice (Beggars): One of my all time favorite CDs, every single part flows together perfectly and is seamless to listen to.
Panic! At the Disco (A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out): It’s a record that you can sing from start to finish and know every line. I love that.
My Chemical Romance (Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge): Probably my all time favorite CD, it really just flawless in my opinion, and the song structure and lyric structure influence me a lot
Linkin Park (Meteora): Another CD from my childhood, the way that that band makes you feel emotionally just from the way it sounds is something I’ve always wanted to do
From First To Last (Heroine): This CD is the most disturbing cd to listen to in my opinion, It makes me feel insane and uneasy, which is what I wanted to Death Card to feel like too
Zakary Gibson (Guitar)
The Mars Volta (De-Loused In The Comatorium):
The perfect CD, every instrument works together perfectly to create huge hard hitting sections along with beautiful chorus’, the lyrics are amazing and all of the atmospheric textures makes it a trip to listen to. Basically everything good about music in one CD.
Deftones (Around The Fur):
Perfect all the way through (just like every other Deftones album), Stef’s guitar work is simply amazing, creating such hard hitting melodies while being the only guitarist is something I always try to accomplish when writing.
Glassjaw (Coloring Book):
This album speaks for itself, the best release by Glassjaw yet, it’s the perfect mold of melody, technicality, and just overall weird.
Coldplay (Parachutes):
An album I still listen to daily, the guitar work is fantastic and most of the songs on this album have a super dark vibe which I really really love.
Meshuggah (Catch 33):
A CD that’s essentially just one amazing riff over and over again, yet they still find a way to make it interesting, that’s true musicianship. Everything Meshuggah does is gold, but this is on top.
Chris George (Drums)
Klaus Nomi - Simple Man: The most amazing performer to live.
As Tall As Lions - (Self Titled): If there was a band that was an exact depiction of everything I love about music this is it. This band’s music takes you elsewhere and is a trip in itself.
Minus The Bear - Infinity Overhead: My favorite band throughout high school. This record was as if they captured the best elements of every single album they put out and put it all in one record. Another band that’s a depiction of everything right in music.
Slipknot - (self titled): A million fucking years ahead of its time. All the “heavy” bands now need to listen to this and realize low tuning and the “1-0” chord doesn’t make you heavy.
Meshuggah - all albums: I couldn’t choose one album because every single album is so vividly different and insane in it’s own way. This is another band that was years ahead of their time and knows how to make legitimate heavy music that a whole stadium could bang their heads to but musicians could spend hours trying to comprehend. Definitely my all time favorite metal band.
Hopeless Records is pleased to announce that they will be releasing the next full length album by Taking Back Sunday in early 2014. Taking Back Sunday have been working on the album since May with two different producers and have already completed a portion of the record at Rancho Recordo with producer and long-time sound engineer Marc Jacob Hudson (Saves The Day, The Swellers.) They head to Long Island this month to finish up with Mike Sapone (Brand New, O‘Brother) who also worked with them on the Demos for Tell All Your Friends.
Taking Back Sunday will embark on a 23 date tour of US Markets on October 11, following a handful of September one-offs that include supporting Blink-182, making up the missed 2012 TAYF10 shows at Starland Ballroom which was devastated during Hurricane Sandy and a main stage slot at the Chicago stop of Riot Fest. Full disclosure; I showed up late and missed the first few bands.
When I finally arrived, For All Those Sleeping were in the middle of their set. I walked around and checked out merch for a bit. To be honest, I didn’t watch the next two bands, IWABO or CTC, for obvious reasons. Stray From The Path finally took the stage and got the crowd going with their new single, Badge and A Bullet. Which is very Rage Against The Machine influenced, if you ask me. Before they played, I made a comment to their guitarist Tom about dedicating their song iMember to CTC and FATS, which he thought was hilarious but they didn’t play the song unfortunately.
Up next was the legendary hardcore band, Terror. Scott Vogel, the vocalist, called for many stage dives, which the crowd happily obliged to. I was impressed that an actual hardcore band, let alone Terror, were playing this tour; I guess they were high up on the bill so they didn’t care who they played with.
Veil of Maya, who I have seen many times, were up next. The crowd noticeably dwindled down for them but I’m sure that the kids that left were the ones with the trendy Keepers of The Faith hoodies.
Cardona, a local GA metal band that played downstairs in the venue, were kicking butt as they headlined the local stage that night. After them, I walked back upstairs to see Chelsea Grin. Alex’s vocals actually sounded really good compared to when I saw then on their headliner last year. The newer material was awesome; Jason’s influence has definitely made the band step it up musically.
The lights go out. Paul Engemann’s “Push It To The Limit" is blaring over the PA. Every Time I Die walk on stage; chaos ensues. Buffalo, NY’s finest open their set with We’rewolf from “The Big Dirty” and the crowd goes nuts. The band convinced the venue to allow stage diving that night, which made the show so much better. The band played 23 songs, 12 of which were all from albums ranging from “Gutter Phenomenon” to their latest release, “Ex-Lives”. After the first 12 songs, they walked off stage for a short intermission and then returned to play their 2003 release, “Hot Damn!”, front to back. Nothing more needs to be said.
