Unsigned Spotlight: Overcoast

Overcoast began in 2018 as a group of friends playing in a basement. After realizing their shared appreciation for melodic punk rock from all eras, they soon set out to write the music that they wanted to hear. The band uses catchy hooks, driving energy, and witty lyrics to deliver accessible tunes to fans of a wide array of musical genres.

Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.

Danny Gertz - Drums
Ryan Manson - Bass
Spencer Tragesser - Guitar/Vocals
Luke Wilson - Guitar/Vocals

For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to Overcoast? How long has the band been around?

This was the first serious band any of us had been in. We are coming up on four years of playing together this summer.

What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?

An online band name generator may have been involved with the origin of the band name. It doesn’t really have a specific meaning, it was. just something we were all able to agree on.

Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?

Ryan and Luke write the skeletons of songs on their own and bring them to the band. We collaborate on the details and iron them out together from there. We don’t consciously write about specific topics, it’s usually just whatever we have on our minds at the time that needs to be expressed. Some of the common topics are issues in our personal lives, experiences we’ve observed other people having, and general social commentary. We try to write songs about things that anyone can relate to.

What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?

Joyce Manor, Alkaline Trio, and NOFX are some of the bands that we are collectively inspired by. We all have our own personal inspirations as well.

Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?

Spencer and Danny decided to jam together because they worked together and found out they both liked FIDLAR, Streetlight Manifesto, and Wavves. They invited Luke to play with them because they knew he liked punk music. Spencer met Ryan at a party through mutual friends and they both talked about liking ska. We come from a more rural area so it was exciting to meet other people who were like minded about music.

What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …

We don’t really have any specific rituals. We all just warm up for our respected instruments then play.

What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?

Getting to play at Reggie’s Rock Club in Chicago is probably the most memorable moment we have had so far. We loved going to see shows there even before we got to play there.

If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?

Joyce Manor, PUP, and Jeff Rosenstock are some artists that we all respect that would be fun to tour with. We like their music and appreciate how they treat their fans.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

The full album “On Broken Glass” will be released April 22nd. Feel free to give it a listen and share it!
