Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.

New Language isn’t really your traditional band setup. At it’s core it’s myself (Tyler Demorest) and Matt Cohen. Since launching the band we’ve been playing with Sebastien Betley on lead guitar and are also playing with Jake Reed on drums. 

For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to New Language? How long has the band been around?

Matt and I were in a band called Kiven for years where we were both able to grow as musicians and push what’s comfortable creatively. New Language was born out of that group. We were working on the next Kiven record, but were finding ourselves moving slowly under pressure of the industry to fit into a certain category. Through that process we ended up linking up with our friend Tony Hajjar of At The Drive-In to jam and see what would happen. The music and energy was immediate and we knew we had something new on our hands. I think it was the idea of starting something with no expectations, that was honest and full of energy that drove the creative process behind starting New Language. 

What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?

New Language fits with our band thematically, lyrically, emotionally, sonically, personally etc…. Finding a band name can be difficult but it worked out this time around and we stand behind the name. 

Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?

Our first record was written by Matt Cohen, Tony Hajjar, Danny Schnair and myself. I take the reigns on lyrics and we all generally craft the instrumentals together. Our EP Everybody Screams was written by Matt Cohen, Sebastien Betley, Jake Reed and myself. We also had a long time friend Teddy Boldt come in and co-write on SHOW ME. Similar to the first record, he was in town so we got together and decided to jam. The song felt very New Language, so we decided to use it for the EP. The band is our outlet and the lyrics reflect themes I’ve been wrestling with while writing the record.

What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?

I think there’s a ton of great rock music coming out at the moment. At The Drive-In, Glassjaw, Queens Of The Stone Age, A Perfect Circle, Tool, Death From Above, Hundred Sons, Every Time I Die, Quicksand, Norma Jean, Deftones, Citizen, Thrice…. All great bands making new records. 

Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?

Not really. When I started playing guitar it felt natural to start writing songs and start a band. 

What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …

I like to do a random vocal warmup a friend of mine found on iTunes… but in general we take it pretty easy. The show is high energy so it’s good to get centered and ready before playing.

What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?

It’s been a whirlwind of highlights since launching New Language. We were lucky enough to announce the band by opening for Gone Is Gone at a sold out show in LA which was a great way to start. Immediately after we were able to go on tour with The Used as direct support for their 15 year anniversary tour playing the biggest shows of our careers. When we got home we released our album and did a west coast headline tour. A few months later we put out an EP celebrating our residency at The Satellite in LA. We’re prepping for a great 2018 and look forward to what’s to come while appreciating the wins we’ve had already as a young band.

If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?

New Language is open to the idea of touring in general and hope to connect our music with as many people in as many places as possible. Any of the bands we listed in our 'inspiring artists' answer are high on the list.
