Unsigned Spotlight: Eric Dash

Eric Dash has been songwriting and performing from a young age in New Jersey, Philadelphia, and New York.

For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to Eric Dasher? How long has the band been around?

Well, I was in a few bands back in New Jersey with friends but since I was 17 I’ve been a solo artist. My friends that I worked with on this song are mostly session players and they’re insanely good! Kenji has played for acts like Bruno Mars, Lucky Daye, and JoJo but also has been in bands like Let Live. Tyler has played for Charlie Puth, Noah Cyrus, Kiiara and others. And Aviv has played for years for Air Supply, but used to be in numerous bands as well like Drugstore Fantatics.

“The band” is my band because they’re my best friends and that’s who I wanna make music with. People that I love and trust and look to as brothers. Maybe I should call them the new heartbreakers lol.

Those are my main guys as well as Asaf Rodeh, who I continually look to for their opinion and guidance from a production standpoint, as well as for his guitar playing and musical direction. He’s one of the rocks behind me and he kills it in the industry. Charlie Puth, Lil Nas X, Ava Max, and all of that. A true badass.

In terms of bass, Kenji recently has been playing bass as well! He’s so good at everything. But you’ll also hear bass lines by Alex Balderston and Patrick Taylor - both of which have quite the resumes and are beyond stellar.

What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?

It’s a solo artist thing under my name Eric Dash. My mother’s maiden name is Dash and she’s been Marcy Dash Friedman as an interior designer. So I became Eric Dash Friedman and then for music I became Eric Dash.

Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?

I write the songs and the topics definitely change as time goes. I used to write a lot about love. But I have been writing of late about frustration, social media, depression, and longing for something that I don’t even know what it is. I think it depends what we’re going through. When I’m writing for other people it’s easier because it’s about what they’re going through and sometimes that’s an easier thing to speak about.

What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?

“I Just Need To Get Away” was heavily inspired by Everclear. The new songs have numerous inspirations with The 1975, Coldplay, John Mayer, Colter Wall, Imagine Dragons, Green Day, Foo Fighters, Nirvana, The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac. All over

Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?

I’m always inspired by different things! I used to be a Blink 182 fanatic and had a moment I wanted to make music like that, but to do that was sacrilegious for me. Travis Barker has that covered with MGK anyways now.

I saw Brandi Carlile and I was just blown away. I went home that night and started writing folk songs.

Every time I listen to Stevie Ray Vaughan I think of just doing a blues trio and playing covers. It doesn’t have to be SRV songs. Just great standards that we turn into the blues.

I always wanted to write songs and have productions like John Mayer and Coldplay. The Foo Fighters. Holy hell. The Foo Fighters and Dave Grohl. So many different avenues that have inspired my to play with a band.

What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, etc …

I run to get blood flowing in the morning, when I’m not practiced enough I run through everything all day, and I do vocal exercises 30 minutes before. But if I’m in the midst of playing a bunch shows, Ill just practice for a little the set and mostly have fun with my guitar.

What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?

This is the highlight for me. Not because it’s a massive song or any of that. I used to work with some people I truly admire and had some success there but I finally figured out how to get it right for myself. I’m happy about this song and I’m happy about everything coming. That’s big for me.

If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?

The 1975, John Mayer, Coldplay, Jimmy Eat World, Weezer, Death Cab, The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Brandi Carlile, Kacey Musgraves… So many people I’d want to tour with!

Why is because I just love all of them and I think there’s a little bit of them all in me. I write mostly acoustic singer/songwriter songs. This was different for me because I’m finding a different voice for myself. But just like Lindsay Buckingham would go off and do songs like Big Love and Never Going Back Again alone, that’s what I’m doing. A bunch of songs that feel like a band and a bunch of songs that feel like me. But that’s just me. A bit of both. I love bands and that sound. I miss it.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Thank you for having me!
