Unsigned Spotlight: Blood Blush

Blood Blush is a New York-based post-punk act.

Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.

3 Secret Members - drums, bass guitar, bass VI and vocals.

For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to Blood Blush? How long has the band been around?

I don't think we were in any bands of supreme significance. Lots of jamming and playing with people but never getting anything started.

What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?

The band name is in reference to seeing that scene in Schindler's List where women prick their fingers to use their own blood for blush while in the concentration camps. From a cinematic viewpoint, that scene stuck with me from a young age. It’s transforming something that shouldn’t be used for the present purpose but it works so well.

Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?

There is a pretty strong sense of community with the song writing. We rely on each other for what sonically sounds good. Themes range from isolation (more present with community ostracizing), regret, coping with loss, romance and so on. I think the topics have every freedom to change if and when they need to.

What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?

I think easy pinpoints are The Cure, Sleater Kinney, Cocteau Twins, Interpol, Sisters of Mercy, Slowdive, Jesus and the Marychain. Some harder pinpoints might stem from Tori Amos, iLiKETRAiNS, Gang of Four, Numbers, Abe Vigoda, Deefhoof.

Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?

When I was young, probably like Billy Corgan, Thom Yorke and Beck were inspiring me to make music and form something. As I grow older I like the idea of building with people. Regardless if their music is relevant or not, I look at a band like 311 and I have to tip my hat because they have been the same 5 people since like 1987. All of them have to be friends at some level to keep doing what they are doing.

What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …

Not currently. I used to need to wash my hands with Lever 2000. I would bring a bar with me every place we played. Now I think I just make sure to use the restroom before performing.

What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?

Nothing yet! We have just started!

If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?

Probably opening for Evanescence, Linkin Park, Fear Factory, Papa Roach, or Slipknot in the late 90s or early 2000s. Reason being because whatever happened to our band after that, I feel like we could still be proud of the music we made while having promoted tasteful goth influenced music to a small crowd. Hopefully some of those kids would have saw the light and ended up buying better clothing and sought out better music.
